In Belém, the indigenous culture has strongly influenced life and culture of its people, especially in cooking and dance.
Marajó is one of the largest islands in the world, it is covered by woods on the west and by huge areas of flooded prairies on the east, where the Asian water buffalo is raised. The whole island is encircled by beautiful beaches and mangroves, and in its hinterland, the richness of the wildlife can be easily enjoyed. LocationContinent or Region: South AmericaCountry or State/County: BrazilBelém, a city founded by Portuguese at the mouth of the Amazon river in the beginning of the colonization of Brazil, hold a nice colonial architectonical heritage still preserved in houses, palaces and churches in downtown. It was the main entrance to Amazon Forest for a long time and have met the richness during the long period of rubber production. The indian culture left strong influences at the people, that may be observed specially on the gastronomy and popular music and dance. The main interesting tourist points to be visited are the Emílio Goeldi Museum, the Market “Ver-o-Peso” (To-See-the Weight), the potteries from Icoaraci, the Doc Station, remodelled port with restaurants and bars, convention area and handcrafts shopping. We recommend the early morning tour to the Papagaios' Island. Marajó, located at the mouth of the rivers Tocatins and Amazonas, is a special attraction. One of biggest island in the world, its territory is recovered by jungle from east to west and big areas of natural flooded fields at east, where asian buffallos are raising. The island is rounded by beautiful beaches and mangroves on the inside, the rich local fauna may be easilly observed. ItineraryDay 1 | Belem Arrival in Belém airport, transfer to hotel. Belém is 120km from the Atlantic ocean at the point where Guamá river turns north and becomes the Guajará bay.It is the biggest port on the Amazon river. From Belém, you set sail for any place that is navigable on the Amazon and its tributaries Free afternoon. We suggest dinner at one of the Restaurant at Docas Station.
Day 2 | Belem - Marajo 5:30 a.m. departure to the port to embark on boat or ferry boat to Marajó. Arrival at 11 a.m. Transfer from the port to the village of Soure. Accommodation.
In the afternoon, visit to the Araruna mangrove, which stands out for its vegetation. Return to hotel.
Day 3 | Marajo After breakfast, departure on boats to visit the Furo do Miguelão. It is a channel inside a mangrove, that was created in the beginning of the last century, to make a shortcut to access some farms. Return to the pousada and free afternoon.
Day 4 | Marajo - Belem After breakfast, visit to Soure, to the leather handcrafts tannery, buffaloes farm and fishing beach. Return to the port of Camará to take the ferry boat to Belém. Arrival expected for 5:00 PM. Transfer to the hotel. Free afternoon.
Day 5 | Belem Half day city tour to see the city’s main attractions : Ver-o-Peso Market - the display of fruits, vegetables, plants, animals and fish, not to mention the people , is fascinating. The most intriguing section is filled with medicinal herbs and roots, dead snakes amulets for every possible occasion and handcraft.
Emilio Goeldi Musem - this museum has three parts : the zoological-botanical garden, the aquarium and the ethnology museum itself. The zoo has manatees, jungle cats, alligators ,snakes , monkeys and many amazonian birds. The highlight here is the museum founded in 1866. It is billed as the greatest anthropology collection of Marajoara ceramics (from Marajó island) in good display, indian artifacts, many stuffed birds and old photos. The church of Nossa Senhora de Nazaré, Teatro da Paz and the buildings of differents architecture that could illustrate the city history. In the afternoon, optional tour to the Icoaraci village, 13 miles from Belém, where many typical native pottery workshops are. All steps in the production can be followed, from the arrival of the clay to the finished piece. Return to the hotel late afternoon. We suggest dinner at Casa das 11 Janelas (House of 11 windows).
Day 6 | Belem Free day. You could come back to Ver-o-Peso Market and spend some time tasting the flavours and smells from the Forest and negociating the price of your souvenirs. We recommend this visit in the morning. We suggest the lunch at Mangal das Garças.
Day 7 | Belem Breakfast. Transfer from the hotel to the airport.
