Tour Overview
Johnstone Strait is unquestionably the best place on earth to sea kayak with the Killer Whales in the wild. Most of British Columbia's 220 Northern Resident Killer Whales return to these waters to feed, sleep, play, and rub their bodies on the pebble beaches of the world-famous Robson Bight Ecological Reserve. There is no better way to encounter pods of these friendly Orca than while sea kayaking Johnstone Strait. Sharing this habitat are playful dolphins, sea lions, harbour seals, minke whales, eagles and black bears. Sea kayaking with the whales is one of life's most amazing experiences.
Sea kayaking and base camping in this prime Orca viewing area, makes this our most popular tour. This tour offers you the best opportunity for viewing the Orcas in the wild. We begin our tour from Campbell River where we board our catamaran power boat 'the Orca Express'. Enjoy spectacular scenery as we travel up the Inside Passage and through the world-famous Seymour Narrows. We are delivered to our base camp regardless of wind or waves. From here we explore and enjoy our days in the realm of Killer Whales. As for accommodations, tents, comfortable sleeping mats, and pillows are provided on this tour. The tents on the base camp tours are more spacious than on our expeditions. They are high quality dome style, with mesh windows, and a cover fly for protection against rain and wind. We have constructed tent platforms to protect the area, for comfort, and to keep things clean. Generally we have enough tents to accommodate both singles and couples. We will do our best to match you up with a suitable partner if we need to. Inflatable sleeping mats, and pillows are provided. No experience is required for our kayak tours. Our adventures are for everyone. Our trips are designed to cater to all levels of experience and abilities. The majority of people who join our tours are first time kayakers, and we take care to introduce you to the sport in a fun and safe manner. All that we ask is that you welcome adventure with an open mind and are able to laugh and have fun when encountering the unexpected. Please feel free to call and discuss which trip is best for you. LocationContinent or Region: CanadaCountry or State/County: British ColumbiaThis tour is located on Quadra Island, B.C. Canada. To get to Quadra Island, and all of our tour starting points, you will need to get to Vancouver Island first. For our Johnstone Strait tour you will need to get to Quadra Island or Campbell River a day before the trip begins. Guest reviewsMaggie and Monty M, July 2010 “An excellent kayaking adventure with the perfect mix of activity and relaxation, breath taking views, luxurious camping, awesome photography opportunities with a variety of wildlife, great food and wonderful guides.”
“Truly an incredible experience. Graham and Jukka both did an excellent job and had a wealth of knowledge. We couldn’t have asked for better guides. This was our best vacation and we can’t wait to work with them again!”
Mary Ella, August 13-16 “Great people (guides & guests), fabulous weather, good food, appropriate paddling for beginners especially. I have never left a “water experience” of 4 days so clean and well-fed! The shower and hot tub were quite unique. PS. Thanks so much for the recognition of Mike’s 67th birthday; your gift is a special treasure. It was great!”
Tour Highlights
Sea Kayaking with a great opportunity to observe killers whales and other creatures of nature.
ItineraryPre trip meeting - Day before John, Breanne or one of your guides will go over the logistics of the tour and answer any questions or concerns you may have. This meeting will be held at the Heriot Bay Inn on Quadra Island at 6pm the day prior to departure. If you cannot make it to the meeting just be sure to call in the day before departure to confirm your arrival.
Day 1 A warm welcome and introduction to your tour guides and captain will prepare you for your adventure. Our route takes us up the waterway of the Discovery Passage, and safely through the infamous 'Seymour Narrows' renowned for its treacherous tidal flows and whirlpools. En route, sightings of marine life such as porpoises, dolphins, sea lions and whales are common. After a 2 1/2 hour journey we arrive at our remote wilderness base camp, situated across from the pristine Tsitika River valley and the Robson Bight Ecological Reserve. After settling into our new surroundings, we will go over kayak orientation and safety procedures before setting off on an afternoon paddle.
Day 2 & 3 After our hearty breakfast we will paddle up the scenic coast in search of the Orca. During low tide we will also keep a look out for Black Bears as they are known to forage along the shores rummaging for inter tidal snacks. We will hike up forest trails to high viewing platforms used by researchers studying the habits of the whales. Lunches will be savoured on one of the many beaches of the Strait. Sightings of Dalls Porpoises, Sea lions, Seals, Otters, Cormorants, Marbled Murrelets, and the eminent Bald Eagle are common. Although these days can be packed full of activities, there is also plenty of opportunity for those who want to kick back and relax at camp and enjoy the stunning surroundings.
Day 4 This is our last day to enjoy the marine environment of Johnstone Strait. Our boat transport will pick us up after lunch and we will arrive back in Campbell River by the late afternoon/early evening. Our approximate return time is around 4:30pm, but please note that this cannot always be guaranteed as the weather and wildlife will play a role in determining when we get back.

Nature & Kind FactorOur Trusted Partner's Responsible and Sustainable Travel Policy
We understand that many of our guests come on our kayaking tours in Canada and around the world to participate in a style of trip that has minimum impacts on the environment. While we follow established minimum impact practices during our tours, our ideals don’t stop at the back door. We firmly believe that a business can operate successfully and still have a minimal or positive impact on the environment and community in which we all live.
We aim to raise the bar in terms of environmental commitment and sustainability in the eco-tourism industry. We are not looking for a pat on the back for our efforts, but we hope to set new standards that encourage other tourism/business providers to also clean up their organizations and become co-leaders in sustainable and environmentally sound practices. In our actual operations in the field we are committed to conducting ourselves in the most responsible manner possible – this goes above and beyond mere camping practices to include all of the elements below. * While kayaking we practice minimum impact camping in order to preserve the nature of the coast. Human waste is dealt with in the most appropriate manner for the location we’re in, soap use in freshwater lakes and streams is not permitted, and at our campsites we keep our ‘footprint’ as small as possible by keeping to established tent sites and trails. Our food is stored out of the reach of any curious animals so as to not alter their natural behavior. * We respect the wildlife and believe in their right to exist without harassment, and while we treasure all sightings, we maintain a healthy distance. We also abide by all whale-watching guidelines and try not to ever disturb wildlife from their normal behavior. * We are founding members of the North Island Marine Mammal Stewardship Association (NIMMSA) which was established to ensure best practices and responsible wildlife viewing standards for tourism operators. * We have established with some and are working with others to establish protocol agreements with First Nations groups who consider the areas we travel in traditional territory. * We hold all required permits and respect all the guidelines for operation set forth by Parks Canada, BC Parks, Crown Land and the Marine Protected Areas. * We support the Robson Bight Ecological Reserve Warden and Research program which aims to educate boaters about the Reserve and the very special Orca whales which frequent this area. We supply the program with donations of surplus food and support whenever possible. * We run our tours back-to-back, which allows us to never have an empty water taxi or van and minimizes our carbon footprint. * We pick up our guests at their accommodation, carpooling to our various trip destinations. * We use primarily Canadian-made and ethically sourced kayaking and camping gear. * Every guest of Spirit of the West receives a re-usable mug to use while on trip, but to also encourage using a travel mug once back at home versus disposable cups when enjoying their daily coffee or tea. * We have a solar power system for charging our emergency communication system and for charging your camera batteries. * We use only biodegradable and phosphate free dish soaps. * 100% recycled toilet paper (don’t worry it’s not recycled toilet paper, its toilet paper made from recycled paper, and other than saving many trees you won’t even know the difference from mainstream TP) * We recycle or compost everything that we can. BC is lucky to have a great returnable drink container program in which we participate. About our Trusted Partner
