Tour Overview

We invite you to join us for an adventure. An adventure designed for you to experience the authentic essence of Kenya’s most independent people and to live with them today as they have lived for generations.

We organise exciting itineraries to beautiful wilderness locations in small, exclusive groups where you will live and learn with the indigenous Maasai people in a way that brings a true exchange of ideas.

Our trips are fun, exciting and occasionally challenging. They will take you to remote areas where you will spend your days outdoors in landscapes not touched by the modern world, and where essential comforts are all catered for.

Bush Adventures, established in 2009, currently offers 4, 7 and 12 day expeditions to northern Kenya, to train with Maasai Warriors and enjoy an adventure that will change the way you experience life.

Location

Continent or Region: Africa

Country or State/County: Kenya

The options from Nairobi, where most international flights arrive, are to drive up or fly and drive. From Nairobi it's a 5-6 hours, very scenic drive: you pass near the Aberdares mountain range, then go around half of mount Kenya, climbing up to 2400 mt. The road then starts descending, opening into a breath taking view of the northern plains and mountain ranges. The last stretch (1 hr approx) is through the bush, on dirt roads (at times no roads!)- you really build up the feeling of arriving into the untamed bush. The cost of a 6 pax safari land cruiser is approx 350$ (including fuel and driver) each way. If you are alone you could either join other trip participants and share a ride, or take a smaller car- a Pajero IO or a Rav4 for instance, would cost approx 160US$ each way and fit comfortably max 2 pax with luggage.

If you prefer to fly, you would need to take a plane to Lewa Downs or Tassia (but there are no scheduled flights there at present). From Lewa it's a 2 hours drive to the camp. The flight would cost approx 300US$ return- you can check the latest prices on safarilink.com or on airkenya.com, the 2 companies that serve Lewa Downs. The transfer from the airstrip to our camp is handled through Il Ngwesi Conservancy that charges 100US$ per vehicle (max 6 pax) each way.

While we do not provide any of the transfers ourselves, we will be happy to assist you in arranging them with the companies we normally deal with.

The following guides will lead the tour

Ketei Naitira

We are the warriors of our tribe now. We are here to protect Maasais and Maasai ways.

If you could have seen us when we were children, when we were supposed to be watching the goats but in fact we were off playing in the dam, losing animals, being scolded daily by our grandmothers, you would worry for the future of our people. How can these mischievous boys grow up to be protectors?

After we were circumcised and become warriors, everything changed, we grew up.

I went to school with people from all over Kenya, and spending time with these other cultures made me realise the real values in my own. It makes me very interested in learning from others – I think when you are here studying our ways, you will find me studying yours just as much.

One thing which I hope you understand is what you come here to do with us, it’s what we’d be doing every day ourselves, even if you weren’t visiting with us. Even the fighting, we would be practicing with each other. People say that I am a peacemaker, I like to help resolve disputes. But I really do enjoy showing you also how we fight. That will be the most fun part of what you do with us here, I think.

Saita Kitonga

Sometimes we see tourists driving into the bush with their car so full of things; food and water and biscuits and equipment. I know that this is important, you don’t want to be without. But I find it funny to think that everything you need, once you can look, is around you.

I’m not expecting you to leave here and give up all your modern comforts, absolutely not. But it’ll surprise you how easy it is to survive in a place which looks so hostile.

My real passion here is bush medicine. I just have to look around a small area and will show you what you need to cure malaria, what to take after childbirth, even something which will clean out your stomach so strongly that afterwards you feel so light you can fly. All of this is here in the natural plants and herbs.

I am worried that we’re losing these plants and knowledge, and I have started a tree nursery at my home to save some, and I’m writing a book to get down on paper all the information I have learned from my grandparents and parents. My grandmother is 135, that’s what she tells me. The others laugh, but she told me how to stay healthy and it seems to work for her.

You might wonder why we are so excited about our Maasai Warrior Training idea, and why we want to invite guests to come and experience life in what can be, for the most part, a pretty closed society. For me, it’s a combination of things.

Firstly, it means that our job allows us, as educated Kenyans, to earn our living within our culture, following our traditional lifestyle. Secondly, we work all day every day outdoors, our ‘meeting rooms’ and ‘offices’ are in the most beautiful landscapes, surrounded by nature. When you live this close to nature, you are listening to a different language. There are so many signals you begin to see and hear - the musky smell of a bull elephant, or the song of the honey guide bird - and you become more sensitive and develop an understanding for the surrounding environment.

I think we all know that feeling of having been outside all day, doing good physical exercise, your muscles feel tired and useful and your senses sharpened. That feeling you used to have when you were a child. I think that’s the sense of fun and excitement and wonder, of which you will find here.

Itinerary

4 day Massai Warrior Training Introduction

A thrilling initiation into some of the fundamental customs of our Maasai warrior traditions, the course is concentrated on how we defend ourselves out in the bush far from home, and how we protect our animals from predators.

You will have an introduction to our culture, how our society is organised and we’ll teach you some of the basics of our language. We’ll spend most of the time in our outdoor classrooms – perhaps in a sandy riverbed or a shaded clearing. Part of the course is a short upwards hike to give you a wide-angle view of the wilderness around us.

Central to being a Maasai warrior is the ability to protect family and cattle, and you will spend your days learning our fighting techniques. Our weapons are hand-fashioned from local hardwoods by master craftsmen. Which will be your natural weapon? The bow and arrow, perhaps? Or our 6ft (2m) fighting spears? Or maybe our rungus – short throwing sticks of wood so dense they can crack a skull. You’ll need to know how to deflect attacks with our famous cow-hide shields – we’ll show you that too.

All of these activities, like everything you do with Maasai Warrior Training, will be carried out with constant vigilance to your safety and that of everyone around you.

We’ll show you how we wrestle – for those times when all our weapons are depleted and we have only our hands and our muscles – and how to track our enemies and how to set an ambush to trap them. You’ll learn how to recognise the different footprints and signs that animals leave – which animal or person has been stalking your boma (homestead) at night? You will also learn how we track our livestock to find them if they are lost, and to identify which predator may have tried to attack them.

Everything is designed to teach you some of the secrets of what we do, and it’s also great fun. We’ll take it all at your pace. And we’ll make sure that we spend time doing the activities you enjoyed the most as many times as you want.

7 Day Massai Warrior Survivor Training

Our second, more comprehensive adventure starts with all of the activities featured in the Introductory Training, and then switches focus onto the ways we have learned since we were children, of how to survive in what might appear to be very hostile terrain.

What are the key things you need to stay alive in tough landscapes? Water, shelter and food. At first none of these might seem to be easy to find. But we will show you how we find drinking water, how we identify the best fuel for campfires, and you’ll learn how to start a fire with nothing but two pieces of wood found nearby. We’ll explain the traps we can set, and how to skin a freshly-slaughtered goat and prepare its meat. To protect our animals against night-time predators, we build thick fences, and you’ll see the knowledge our people have built up over generations put into action.

Here, if you fall ill with a common, simple complaint, we know there is no need to go to the doctor. Nature’s pharmacy is all around us. We’ll show you how to grind or process plants and barks to cure malaria, backache or an upset stomach.

We’ll introduce you to some of the members of our tribe’s Council of Elders, who will join us around the campfire to talk of times past, our cultural history, our sacred beliefs – and of the adventures of their fascinating lives.

And all of this, everything you have learned, will be put into practice when you spend one day and one night out in the bush, sleeping under the stars (with a mosquito net) alongside us, your trainers. This will be a true experience of life as a Maasai warrior – aside from, perhaps, the presence of an armed wildlife ranger for a little extra protection.

On our last morning, you’ll graduate as a true Maasai Warrior Trainee, with memories that will last you into that time when you yourself are also an elder.

12 Day Massai Warrior Full Training

Our most comprehensive Training programme teaches you everything involved in the Introductory and Survivor packages, and then branches out to teach you about the most important aspect of our culture: our livestock. We believe that Enkai – our god – gave every cow on earth to us the Maasai. It is therefore a holy honour to treat them as well as we can; and in turn they become our symbols of wealth, material and the spiritual.

We’ll explain to you the importance of our livestock in our culture, we’ll teach you how to milk a cow and a goat, and then together we will herd them out to grazing, just as we to do. As we walk through the bush, you will learn to be alert to the bird-calls and signals warning of predators. We will show you how to judge which cows are the most healthy, which have hides covered in the markings and patterns we prize the most – and, so, which are the most valuable. You’ll learn how we protect them from disease and from predators (your fighting techniques might come in handy). We’ll teach you how we barter at the market to get the best price for a cow.

This all leads to what could be one of our most challenging activities for you – we’ll hike to a nearby homestead where your job will be to identify the strongest and healthiest cow, and use your bartering skills to purchase your chosen cow and then to bring it back safely to camp. Once you understand the value of cows to our culture, only now will you truly start to see what it means to be a Maasai.

To understand that, though, you will also be given a much broader insight into our culture, especially our jewellery and dancing, including our famous high-jump rituals, and their respective meanings. You’ll learn about how our mothers, wives and sisters live, and how that is different from our lives as Warriors. And we will spend time with a traditional religious healer, learning some of the rituals and traditions they use. At the finale of this, our Full Training, we will prepare a celebration party to show that you have ‘come of age’, decorating your skin and hair, and seeing if, now, you really can jump higher than the rest.

Nature & Kind Factor

Our Trusted Partner's Responsible and Sustainable Travel Policy

- We are part of the local community and work with it: one of our founders comes from the area, as do almost all our employees. We have worked to repair the roads, we are supporting local schools by finding volunteer teachers, whenever possible we source products locally. We provide security in the area, as well as emergency help. We send our staff out with the other local warriors when the community requires them to patrol the area.
- We are in a very fragile ecosystem: we minimize our impact on it and we work to actively protect it. We do all our activities on foot, using a motorvehicle only for supplies and emergencies. We have max 8 guests, no electricity, no running water. For all camp uses except drinking, we get water from the nearby river, collecting it in buckets then filtering it by hand and sterilizing it with chlorine, and we minimize its usage for both guests and staff. In the rainy season we put thorny branches in the ditches excavated by erosion, thus slowing the flow of silt and the deepening of the erosion. We use as little firewood as possible, and only pick dead branches- never cutting live trees or branches. This in fact is standard Maasai practice in the area, and it has allowed it to retain beautiful big trees, unlike the neighboring areas inhabited by communities that have different practices. We recycle our waste, composting organic waste and using it as fertilizer. We minimize the amount of waste produced by rbuying in bulk and ecycling containers whenever feasible.
