Tour Overview
In March 2010 Nalubale Rafting’s Head Guide Reuben Connolly will lead the first ever commercial rafting expedition on the part of the White Nile from the Owen Falls Dam in Jinja to Karuma Falls on the edge of Murchison Falls National Park. It is a distance of approximately 300 kilometres.
The eight day journey will take the expedition team through challenging grade 5 white water, across the immense Lake Kyoga and vast papyrus swamps. The end destination is the scenic Karuma Falls. As this is the first time we navigate this part of the river, Nalubale rafting has decided to sell the seats at cost price. We do so because we need to learn more about where the ideal camp sites are, what the re-supply options are, what obstacles there might be, etc before selling this trip as a high quality product. This means that all team members must be prepared to deal with unexpected situations during the journey. The team members must also be prepared to participate actively in all daily chores, from rowing in the blazing sun to making tea in the dark before the sun rises to washing the dishes at night. In short, everyone will be expected to put in a fair amount of hard work. It is very likely that we’ll fall behind schedule. If this happens then we’ll have to row both day and night. No matter what, the journey will include a full night of rowing across Lake Kyoga under a full moon. It is guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience. At the end of the trip, there’ll be a party at Karuma Falls. The next day the team members will either return to Jinja by car - or continue on a safari in the beautiful Murchison Falls National Park. On the first two days of the expedition the team will navigate a number of major rapids ranging from grade 1 to grade 5. Because of this an additional number of safety kayakers and an oar boat will accompany the team. Normal Grade 5 rafting procedures and safety guidelines will be followed. The following guide will lead the tourReuben Connolly Nalubale Rafting Head Guide

This is a unique opportunity to experience a real African outdoor adventure.
ItineraryDay 1 - Distance 30 km Breakfast and introduction meeting in Jinja at 8am, followed by packing and grade 5 safety briefing. Full day of grade 5 rafting in paddle boats. Snack lunch on river. Camping at the magnificent Itanda Falls. BBQ dinner followed by briefing on day 2.
Day 2 - 20 km After breakfast we get back on the river for more white water rafting. Lunch at the Hairy Lemon Island. Continue to Busana where we set up camp and prepare dinner. This is the end of the white water section. From here on and the rest of the trip we will use oars instead of paddles and we will carry everything we need for the next 6 days in our boats. After dinner we’ll talk about day 3.
Day 3 - Distance 70 km After a pre dawn breakfast we hit the river at sunrise and take turns at rowing the two rafts. Lunch on the river. The aim is to make it to the edge of Lake Kyoga and find a suitable camp site there. Dinner and briefing on day 4.
Day 4 - Distance 60 km Assuming we made it to the edge of Lake Kyoga the day before we can sleep in on day 4 and take it easy until late afternoon where we pack up and hit the river, as the plan is to row across Lake Kyoga at night. The lake has very little to no current to help us along and if there is a head wind the rowing is going to be very hard. Crossing the lake at night means that sun and heat will not be a factor. Dinner will be eaten on the rafts. Sleeping will be on the rafts.
Day 5 - Distance 40 km Depending on the time we get there, we will stop for some hours in the Lwampanga area and get some rest and a meal on solid ground. Thereafter we continue towards Masindi, but stop well before it to set up camp, eat dinner and have a briefing on Day 6.
Day 6 - Distance 60 km We start early and are on the river at sunrise, passing Masindi Port well before lunch. Some time after lunch we start looking for a suitable place to set up camp, followed by dinner and briefing on Day 7.
Day 7 - Distance 20 km This is the team’s final day on the river. We get up early and once again we beat the first rays of the sun to the river; rowing until we reach Karuma Falls, our destination. Here we set up camp and meet with the truck from Jinja that have brought us supplies for a respectable bush party at night.
Day 8 After breakfast the team is facing a 7 hour drive back to Jinja. Lunch will be the local roadside bbq’ed chicken and beef with chapattis. For those wishing to continue on safari in Murchison Falls National Park a transport vehicle will be waiting.
