Tour Overview

It is special to cross the mountain plateau by dogsled. The coastal weather is very changeable, from bright blue skies with the sun dazzling to horizontal snow blizzards with white all around. The tour starts from the comforts of Engholm Husky design Lodge outside Karasjok - in the heart of the Sámi culture. We heads north, to our remote fishing house "Stenbukt" at the Arctic sea. Daily stretches of 35 -60 km. The nights will be spent in a tent and maybe some night in cabin. The tour provide interesting experiences for outdoor people who looking for something special. We go far off the beaten track, break our own trail, using the freedom that sled dogs give.

Christel Finne

"The freedom of being in nature, at all seasons with sled dogs gives me a feeling of life and. When I came north - I got fascinated by the contrasts in the seasons. The bright summer nights with midnight sun and the arctic winter's unique tranquillity with Northern lights". With my background knowledge and skills, I have joined in developing this fantastic place. And I enjoy very much when I can share all this with others!"

Sven Engholm

Sven Engholm is 11 time winner of Europe's longest sled dog race, the "Finnmarksløpet - 1000 km". He is a top ten finisher in "Iditarod" - a 1800 km race in Alaska. Thanks to his university studies in natural geography, it is a pleasure for him to explain the many geographical and other natural phenomena's while leading a tour.

" The desire to do something meaningful in life brought me to Karasjok. I had a longing within me for untouched nature.

Based upon my own feelings for the area - the exotic light, the darkness and the great plateau - I developed a product which is now bearing fruit.

I built up to what we have today which has, with the years, become the success I had hoped for when I started."

Tour Highlights

Expedition to the Arctic Sea by dog sled ...

Itinerary

Day 1

Program start with dinner. The guide will have the first briefing regarding the tour.

Day 1 on Expedition to the Arctic Sea at www.NatureandKind.com (THE.NATURAL.CHOICE)

Day 2

The morning is spent provision of snowsuits, boots and other equipment. Organizing the teams of huskies and learning the basics of caring for your team and driving the sleds. Checking that mushers are matched with their teams of huskies on a daytrip with your "own" team.  You have time for a visit to the Sámi Museum in Karasjok.

Day 2 on Expedition to the Arctic Sea at www.NatureandKind.com (THE.NATURAL.CHOICE)

Days 3 to 8

With your "own" team of 6 dogs, we set the compass north- west and reach the mountain plateau with the dog teams already the same day - A fascinating landscape, scanty and windswept.

Overnight in tent.

We cross the largest lake of Finnmark "Jiesjavrre". The view is endless at all directions and we break our own trail further north-north-west to the valley "Stabbursdalen". We expect to spend the night in a small remote cabin, which is situated down in a valley, hidden in the birch forest.

By now mushers and the huskies have usually got to know each other’s ways and the safari can cover a lot of ground. We pass the upper end of the "Stabbursdalen National Park" to our place for the night.

We go far off the beaten track, break our own trail further north-east using the freedom that sled dogs give.  Some great ice fishing can be done in the numerous lakes.

We head north and for the first time we can see the Arctic Ocean and look down at the fjords.

On day 7, 8 (depending of weather and sledding condition), we reach our cosy house "Stenbukt" located in a remote bay right on the sea - no road, - no neighbors.

Days 3 to 8 on Expedition to the Arctic Sea at www.NatureandKind.com (THE.NATURAL.CHOICE)

Day 9

Smaller tours can be ventured upon alone if desired: Snow shoeing or walking. Great ice fishing in the lakes nearby. Maybe you just like to relax in front of the fire place.

Day 9 on Expedition to the Arctic Sea at www.NatureandKind.com (THE.NATURAL.CHOICE)

Day 10

Sled dog trip to the road. Transfer by car back to Engholm Husky Lodge Karasjok. A dinner gathered in the warm atmosphere is waiting for us.

Day 10 on Expedition to the Arctic Sea at www.NatureandKind.com (THE.NATURAL.CHOICE)

Day 11

The program end at breakfast. It's worth considering whether to stay some extra days for interesting activities as lodge guest before and/or after the tour.

Nature & Kind Factor

Our Trusted Partner's Responsible and Sustainable Travel Policy

I had a longing within me for untouched nature. Based upon my own feelings for the area - the exotic light, the darkness and the great plateau - I developed a product which is now bearing fruit. I built up to what we have today which has, with the years, become the success I had hoped for when I started.

We give unique nature based experiences founded on knowledge and a gentle and sustainable use of the environment and working hard to reduce the environmental footprint. It is important for us to use the environment on it's own terms. We wish to leave as few traces as possible and as far as possible avoid wearing on the environment we enjoy.

We cater for smaller groups. A small group leaves fewer traces and allowing for more interaction between the client and the guide. We avoid assistance from snow mobiles. All equipment is on the dog sleds. We have a proven passion for serving local and organic food and using our business to make significant contributions to the local sami community.
