Tour Overview

This trip is recommended for adventurous people that would like to do something truly unique, learn new skills and live life to the fullest. Age and gender sets no limits, however you must be in a good physical shape. Much of the time will be spent in the hands of the arctic environment.

This journey starts in the heart land of the Sámi culture and ends further north by the arctic coast, where the reindeers have their summer grazing area and where they give birth to a new generation. You will be taking part in the daily work and learn how the Sámis herd their reindeer herds. Taking part in the migration means you will be travelling with the Sámis, like the Sámis. You will be eating and sleeping like a Sámi herder. Your participation means that you will be living close to the reindeer and experience the old nomadic life of the Sámi people. You will be put to work when necessary leading the herd across the ancient and desolate Finnmark plateau by snow mobile. You will be sleeping by an open fire in a lavvu (Sámi tent) and you will be served traditional Sámi food.

In the middle of April it is light almost 24 hours a day, the snow has started melting and there are some good opportunities for ice fishing on the numerous lakes we pass by.

Christel Finne

Christel Finne has background from mountain climbing, downhill and cross country skiing, touring with ski sail and pulka. Horse riding guide. Several years full time working guide on overnight tours/expeditions with sled dogs on the Finnmark plateau.

"The freedom of being in nature, at all seasons with sled dogs gives me a feeling of life and. When I came north - I got fascinated by the contrasts in the seasons. The bright summer nights with midnight sun and the arctic winter's unique tranquillity with Northern lights". With my background knowledge and skills, I have joined in developing this fantastic place. And I enjoy very much when I can share all this with others!"

Sven Engholm

Sven Engholm is 11 time winner of Europe's longest sled dog race, the "Finnmarksløpet - 1000 km". He is a top ten finisher in "Iditarod" - a 1800 km race in Alaska. He is an experienced outdoor guide and has also lead several expeditions to Spitsbergen, Greenland and across Siberia. Thanks to his university studies in natural geography, it is a pleasure for him to explain the many geographical and other natural phenomena's while leading a tour.

" The desire to do something meaningful in life brought me to Karasjok. I had a longing within me for untouched nature.

Based upon my own feelings for the area - the exotic light, the darkness and the great plateau - I developed a product which is now bearing fruit.

I built up to what we have today which has, with the years, become the success I had hoped for when I started."

Tour Highlights

This adventure is a unique privilege made available for the very few by a Sámi family from Karasjok in Finnmark.

Itinerary

Day 1

Starts with dinner served at Engholms Husky Lodge and a briefing about the program. The lodge is an experience in it self.

Day 1 on Sami Reindeer Migration at www.NatureandKind.com (THE.NATURAL.CHOICE)

Day 2

Will be at your disposal for interesting excursions and activities. A guided tour to the Sámi museum and the Sámi parliament will give you an insight into Sámi history and the current situation for the Sámi people. Also we would like to recommend the centre for Sámi arts and crafts, Sápmi Culture Park and a visit to the local knife smith. There is also always many things happening at the lodge. Puppies are being trained, there are many interesting books in the musher's library and you can explore the nearby surroundings on snowshoes.

Day 2 on Sami Reindeer Migration at www.NatureandKind.com (THE.NATURAL.CHOICE)

Days 3 to 6

We will leave the lodge to link up with the reindeer herd and the herders. We follow the herd on their long migration across the plateau. A fascinating barren and wind swept landscape reaching as far as the eye can see. Here you will have interesting natural experiences together with the Sámis who love to share their knowledge, experience and wisdom of life with their guests. Their fascination for nature and the free life is striking. We will be taking part in the migration for 4 days. The return back to Engholms Husky Lodge in Karasjok is by car. Here you will find a hot sauna, a warm shower and we end the journey gathered for a dinner in a warm and cosy atmosphere.

Days 3 to 6 on Sami Reindeer Migration at www.NatureandKind.com (THE.NATURAL.CHOICE)

Days 7 and 8

Will be a day of dog mushing together with the famous dog musher Sven Engholm (10 victories in the Finnmark race, top 10 finisher in the great Iditarod race and leader of several expeditions). The programme ends after breakfast on day 8.

Nature & Kind Factor

Our Trusted Partner's Responsible and Sustainable Travel Policy

I had a longing within me for untouched nature. Based upon my own feelings for the area - the exotic light, the darkness and the great plateau - I developed a product which is now bearing fruit. I built up to what we have today which has, with the years, become the success I had hoped for when I started.

We give unique nature based experiences founded on knowledge and a gentle and sustainable use of the environment and working hard to reduce the environmental footprint. It is important for us to use the environment on it's own terms. We wish to leave as few traces as possible and as far as possible avoid wearing on the environment we enjoy.

We cater for smaller groups. A small group leaves fewer traces and allowing for more interaction between the client and the guide. We avoid assistance from snow mobiles. All equipment is on the dog sleds. We have a proven passion for serving local and organic food and using our business to make significant contributions to the local sami community.
