Tour Overview

Fantastic holidays on La Gomera filled with exciting boat trips. Encounter wild dolphins and whales, snorkel in crystal clear water rich in species, enjoy swimming and sun bathing, flamboyant sunsets and the beautiful ocean itself.

The sea south-west of La Gomera with its unique biodiversity is one of best places in the world where we humans can interact with whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. Join our well trained and experienced crew to have an unforgettable encounter with these enchanting creatures. You sail on a former fishing boat, now a licensed Whale Watching boat, allowed to carry ten guests. Our expert team will constantly share their knowledge and experience on board and record each sighting for a research database used to enhance the protection and preservation of the animals and their habitat. Children are very welcome!

An encounter with dolphins and whales is always an exciting adventure. Each excursion is new and totally different. We never know if, where and when we will meet the cetaceans. Often we meet the following dolphins: powerful Bottlenose dolphins or a small group of naughty Rough-Toothed dolphins or the agile Striped or Common dolphins. At times the boat is surrounded by playful Atlantic Spotted dolphins. We also meet Pilot whales and the rare Beaked whales. Sometimes we even see big whales like Finback, Sei- or Sperm whales. The ocean never ceases to surprise us in this area!

Location

Continent or Region: Europe

Country or State/County: Canary Islands

La Gomera astounds its visitors with incredible natural beauty of rare vegetation and abrupt terrain. It is located 400 km west of the African continent in the Atlantic Ocean and, after El Hierro, the 2nd smallest Canary Islands with a surface area of 378 square kilometres. Although La Gomera is located near the equator, the gentle trade winds and cool Canary currents make the climate mild and moderate all year, with an average temperature around 22ºC. The island is every nature lover's paradise. The scenery is splendid with an amazing system of terrace farming and thousands of palm trees perched on steep green valleys, in addition to the exotic foliage of the central plateau, inhabited by the ancient laurel forest national park enveloped in mist. The days at your leisure can easily be filled with: relaxing at the beach, hiking trips through the national park, or mountain biking, scuba diving, or a yoga class.

Travelling around on the island, one passes invariably through the Garajonay National Park (UNESCO World Heritage) in the centre of the island (800-1000m altitude). Covering 10% of La Gomera's surface, this 4000ha (9884 acre) park is a haven for some of the planet's most ancient forest. Over 400 species of flora, including its famous laurel, can be found here. Most trails running through the park were once used by the Gomeros. The majority of the hikes are relatively light, and you can get a solid view of the landscape without venturing too far.

The following guides will lead the tour

At OCEANO she takes care of the following programmes: Oceanic Week Classic, Abundant Acores, Dominican Republic and the children’s programme “Born to be wild” (German speaking). Ever since she has been fascinated by these special animals and her heart beats for the protection of the cetaceans and the ocean as well as for the beautiful island of La Gomera where she is living mostly for 15 years. For 7 years she has been part of the board of the German NGO M.E.E.R. e.V.

Nowadays she is running a German tour operator and a Whale Watching company on the Canaries/ La Gomera.

Nature & Kind Factor

OCEANO is taking part in the continuous CSR (corporate social responsibility) reporting process to permanently improve the sustainability of our work and lower the impact on the planet. Presumably, we will be licensed next year

We offer our Oceanic Fair Modules to all our clients which they can book in addition to all our holiday programmes. By making a reasonable contribution, in addition to the price of their booked programme, our guests can contribute responsibly to research and conservation of sea mammals and against global warming.

We work together with small, locally owned businesses, run by local families and encourage our guests to frequent local facilities like supermarkets and restaurants.

We provide plenty of information about the local environment and culture, for example on our website, in our newsletters and through our guides on each holiday programme who give insight into responsible behaviour towards dolphins and whales, problems related to whale-watching and environmental care in general.

Adhering strictly to the whale watching regulations, we only do respectful Whale Watching with small groups and providing plenty of information to our guests onboard. To avoid stress for the marine mammals, we behave according to our principle that we are the guests and the animals are our hosts and they decide if they want closer contact to the boat. Respectful whale watching means to adapt to the particular situation and adjust our sailing manner to the animals’ behaviour. The information we gather during the sightings is shared with a non-profit conservation and research organization (M.E.E.R. e.V.) to support research and preservation.

Furthermore, our Whale Watching vessels off La Gomera serve as a research platform as OCEANO works together with the German NGO M.E.E.R. e.V. and supports their scientific work. The crew records each sighting of cetaceans and submits their information to a database which is used for research into the behaviour and protection of the animals. With these measures we enhance the knowledge and awareness of our guests towards their destination and its people, towards the enchanting cetaceans and their endangered habitat and give useful tips on how to contribute to preserve these treasures!

Additionally to all our OCEANO holiday programmes, you can book our Oceanic FAIR Modules.

By making a reasonable contribution, in addition to the price of your booked programme, you can contribute responsibly to the studies and protection of sea mammals and against global warming.

Module 1: atmosfair means: Fly – and pay for the greenhouse gases! For people who are concerned regarding the environmental impacts of their air travel, a new service has been established: atmosfair. Utilizing an emissions calculator, atmosfair customers can figure out how much greenhouse gas emissions are caused by their individual flights (London – Tenerife approx. 37,--€). With your donation you enable atmosfair to run projects in developing countries where these emissions will be saved – check out the projects on their website: http://www.atmosfair.de/index.php?id=9&L=3

!!! For all our guests who book 14 days on La Gomera or Madeira with us: We will take over 50% of the amount for your emission offset !!!

Module 2: Adopt-a-Dolphin with M.E.E.R. e.V. (duration of 1 year, 60 €). Since 1995 the German NPO M.E.E.R. e.V. is researching the marine mammals off La Gomera. With your token adoption you can make sure that this research will continue. This NGO - of which everyone at OCEANO is a member – is also investigating the complex problems revolving around fast ferries on the Canary Islands and worldwide. With the adoption you will receive a welcome letter with a photo of your favourite dolphin or whale species. http://www.m-e-e- r.de/verein.0.html?&L=2

Module 3: Donation to Pro Wildlife. (at least 25,-- € ) The NPO Pro Wildlife based in Munich provides valuable project work for the marine mammals and the sea and is consequently lobbying their conservation. The department for whales and dolphins works on topics such as whaling, the toxic loads of heavy metals in marine mammals and bycatch. Their studies contribute inter alia at the International Whaling Commission (IWC) to keep the ban against international whaling. http://www.prowildlife.de/en/en.html

Our Trusted Partner's Responsible and Sustainable Travel Policy

Canary Islands Whale Watching Regulations

In 1996 the Canaries Government released regulations for the growing whale watching tourism. These regulations were revised in 2002. Following is the text of Annex I of the 2002 regulations, representing the Code of Conduct which is effective to date:

ANNEX I: Code of Conduct

A) Basic obligations:
- do not intercept the trajectory of the animals.
- do not separate or disperse the groups of animals being observed, especially when a mother and calf are involved
- avoid the simultaneous presence of more than 3 vessels at a distance less than 200 meters from a cetacean or group of cetaceans
- Maintain a distance of at least 60 meters from the animals except in situations of emergency or under express authorization
- Do not swim or dive deliberately in the proximity of the animals, without express permission
- Do not throw food or waste in the proximity of the animals

B) Methods of approach:
- When a vessel is within 300 meters of cetaceans it must move at a slow speed, not more rapidly that the slowest moving animal of the group.
- Approaches to cetaceans must be made gently, converging in the direction that the animals themselves are following.
- Approaches must never be made head on, always allowing for the movement of the cetaceans in any direction.
- During the observation a parallel trajectory to the animal, must always be attempted to be maintained.
- Avoid in all cases abrupt changes in direction or velocity.
- Put the motor on idle, at least one minute before turning it off if the vessels stops in order to observe cetaceans. The same is to be done if an animal approaches the vessel.
- Do not start the motor, or increase speed, if an animal is found within 60 meters of the boat.

C) Behaviour with Cetaceans:
Abandon the zone if any sign of alarm, change or stress such as abrupt changes in direction or speed, successive dives or exhaling air under water is shown by the animals.
Avoid noises that could bother the animals, as well as emitting sounds to attract them.
Advise authorities of your location in the case of an accidental injury to a cetacean. Do the same in the event of observing a dead floating cetacean.
If two or more vessels approach the same individual or groups, they must communicate amongst themselves in order to coordinate the approaches and manoeuvres in a way to minimise repercussions to the animals.

About our Trusted Partner

It all started 15 ago: I had been invited to a sailing cruise here on the Canaries on board a beautiful wooden sailing boat. I fell in love with this boat and the dolphins and whales. The following 15 years have been full of sightings of cetaceans and many enthusiastic guests – our Oceanic Week programme has been running stable ever since.

15 years later – OCEANO is born. OCEANO – the word implies for me the vastness of the ocean, just imagine the reflections of the sun on the surface, sparkling... and then the fin of a dolphin comes into sight. It’s wonderful as well that OCEANO is understood in almost every language.

Important to me and the whole OCEANO Team is the way we meet and approach the dolphins and whales out there.

Respectful Whale Watching is a must for us. We also place great value on providing information about cetaceans and the ocean and how to be careful with the resources of ourselves and the planet as well as to make sure our guests can enjoy their holidays to a maximum.

On your journey through our OCEANO website you will come to know more about OCEANO and the OCEANO Team.

I look forward to welcoming you on La Gomera or at one of our other exciting destinations and wish you lots of fun clicking though our homepage.

2009 is the OCEANO Makaronesian Year we have amplified our programme with a new destination: the Flower Island Madeira and of course continue enjoying the Abundant Azores. Wherever you travel with us, we have already been there ourselves or have excellent contacts.

And do look forward with us to the coming years as every year we will be planning a new journey to a very special WW-destination.
