Tour Overview
Food & drink
Included in the cost of the trip are meals in some fantastic restaurants, sampling some of the best food Africa has to offer. While we will cover drinks during meals, we may ask you to chip in if it turns out to be a particularly thirsty night... Also, there will be a couple of occasions while in towns, when the group will be free to explore and as such we will leave lunches to your own discretion. This will be only 2 or 3 occasions though. Accommodation We have carefully picked some of the best hotels and lodges whenever we are in towns and cities, with all the comforts you would normally expect, but not in the cold characterless style of a high rise hotel block. While visiting our more remote and rural project sites the accommodation will be comfortable but a lot more basic. Transportation This will be a mix of internal flights and privately hired safari vehicles and minibuses. Once you have booked onto the trip, we will be with you every step of the way in the build up for departure, helping to sort flights, insurance, providing recommendations on kit, anything you should need. Travelling alone? Not a problem. Our price is based on two people sharing, and if you are joining this trip on your own, you will be sharing a room with someone of the same sex. If you would prefer to have your own room, you can pay our single supplement of £200. Also, we will be visiting two of our most successful projects in Africa. Add in a slice of real luxury at the end of each day and a cool gin and tonic. You’ve seen it on Big Cat Diary and Planet Earth, now see it for real! Team size: 6-12 people For: All ages Duration: Two weeks ItineraryDays 1-3 | Departure from London to Lamu, Kenya Departing from London, an overnight flight takes us via Nairobi to the wonderful island of Lamu in Kenya. Ease into a slower pace of life and acclimatise at this luxury beach getaway. Take a dhow trip to the nearby Takwa ruins and sample the amazing local tiger prawns and lobster.
Days 4-5 | Nairobi and Kenya Waterelief Project Fly from Lamu to Nairobi, the hub of Africa. Grab some bargins in Nairobi’s bustling markets and enjoy dinner at the world famous Carnivore Restaurant. A short drive will take you to our ground breaking Waterelief project. Here you will see what Quest volunteers’ hard work has achieved and the difference it has made to the local people. With a second successive year of poor rains the importance of this project cannot be underestimated.
Days 6-8 | Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti and TanzaniaCommunity and Schools Project A quick flight from Nairobi to Arusha before venturing on safari through the incredible Ngorongoro Crater, a natural oasis containing the big five. At this time of year the grass is low and the animals abundant. After a night in a fantastic lodge explore the plains of the Serengeti and keep your eyes peeled for the fastest mammal on earth.
On the way back from the safari stop off at Babati, a thriving market town. Sip a cool drink by the lake while listening out for hippos. Visit nearby Waang’warai School another of Quest’s Projects. Steady progress has been made to build one of Tanzania’s most impressive rural schools. The school farm not only provides a sustainable income and organic produce but has been transformed from what was once infertile land.
Days 9-10 | Lake Victoria, Uganda This trip is all about the largest, fastest and spectacular. Lake Victoria does not disappoint. We fly from Arusha to Entebbe visiting Kampala and ‘Chimp Island’ getting up close and personal with some of our closest relatives. Alternatively put your feet up and relax before heading out into the lowland jungles of Uganda.
Days 11-12 | Gorilla Trekking The highlight of the trip and a true opportunity of a lifetime. With serious pressure from deforestation and poaching Gorillas are some of the most endangered primates on the planet and may not be with us for much longer. Day 1 takes us into Bwindi Impenetrable Park and through rolling hills known as ‘little Switzerland’ to our overnight stop. Day 2 starts with a quick briefing before we set off in search of the gorillas. The excursion can take between 4-8 hours and the walk can be steep and slippery. You will get 1 hour to quietly observe these magnificent creatures. After another overnight in the lodge we transfer to Jinja.
Day 13-14 | Jinja Finish at the source of the Nile with a well deserved gin and tonic, essential malaria prophylaxis! Some of the best white water rafting can be done here so if you’re looking for a final adrenaline rush before flying home you’re in the right place. We will end with a party in a top local restaurant.
