Tour Overview

Imagine a panther stealing through thick jungle, a dolphin leaping in the ocean or an eagle soaring through the sky. All of these creatures are perfectly adapted to their environments. If they were taken out of these habitats, confined to a limited space and fed unnatural food, their health and wellbeing would suffer.

So why do we think we are any different?

Humans spent 200,000 years as “hunter-gatherers” or wild humans, adapting to life on the savannah. We were tall, strong, lean, fast, agile and fertile. We did not need intervention in the form of modern chemicals or equipment to keep fit and healthy. Nature provided everything we needed. Many of us have become zoo humans because we are living in an environment that is radically different to the one in which we evolved to live. Our environment has changed at a rapid rate but our bodies cannot adapt so quickly. As a result our health – mental, physical, emotional and spiritual – has suffered.

At Wildfitness our aim is to transform zoo humans into wild humans again. We will teach you the fundamentals of wild movement, wild eating and wild living, giving you all the knowledge and guidance you need to re-discover your inner animal.

Location

Continent or Region: Africa

Country or State/County: Kenya

Wildfitness Kenya participants stay in the elegant and luxurious Baraka House on the north coast of Kenya near Watamu. With its panoramic rooftops and beautiful balconies overlooking the Indian Ocean, it is the perfect place for chilling out, watching the sun set or meeting friendly monkeys.

Watamu is a sleepy fishing village on one of the top ten beaches in the world, where the sand is dazzlingly white. Opposite Baraka House are teeming coral reefs and stretching back is the intriguing Sokoke forest reserve. Flanked by Mida creek (a turtle breeding area), Watamu is a designated UN area of outstanding natural beauty.

Tour Highlights

The schedules are packed with workshops, key skills classes and adventurous training.

KEY SKILLS

Wild running – “flight”:
All human beings are designed to run. It is one of the most fundamental of our evolutionary movements. If running is done with correct technique it will bring about structural integrity, heal injuries, enhance performance and is fantastic for intensity. Developed by Dr. Romanov, we teach “barefoot-style” wild running which is the key to being able to run, injury-free, for the rest of your life!

Boxing – “fight”:
Humans are designed to defend themselves. Boxing mimics this natural movement pattern and builds strength and resilience in the transverse plane (where most injuries occur). It is a great way of getting intensity, releasing stress and can enhance performance in many sports, particularly racket sports.

Kettle bells – “lifting”:
Throwing about a weight is another core human movement (imagine throwing an animal over your shoulder after a successful hunt). Kettle bell training is the best method of strengthening your whole body in a totally functional way. It strengthens you in all planes of movement, is dynamic, progressive, an awesome way to get an intense workout and particularly good for helping lower back problems. You will be converted!

Optional extra activities include: Scuba-diving, Windsurfing and Deep-sea fishing.

- 'KICKSTART' COURSES

The schedule is packed with workshops, key skills classes and adventurous training. You will feel your body changing and have learnt the basic tools for improving your fitness regime when you return home.

This course includes the following:

An initial 15 minute assessment with our coaches that records performance parameters including specific movement patterns and running. We do not recommend that body composition is measured as 9 days is too short a time for us to advise you to aim for a significant change in this; a 15 minute follow up explanation and guidance through the individualised exercises prescribed as a result of this assessment; a 15 minute reassessment at the end of the course; an information CD to take away with before and after footage of your movement patterns, posture and running plus photos and information on workouts you will learn on the course; 2 - 3 training sessions per day; 5 workshops covering movement, metabolism & nutrition; 2 massages; group sessions of stretching/flexibility; small group swimming tips session; 1 morning off; all food, transport and accommodation.

Note: You may find that there are other participants on the course that are partaking in longer courses and are therefore entitled to different things or are in a different stage in the process. This course is predominantly group activities although the trainers are around to talk with at any stage and the group size is a maximum of 11 people. The longer courses have more 1:1 time scheduled in. Exact therapies and skills on offer will vary between courses depending on the team.

- 'REVITALISE' COURSES

This course covers all the basics of our Kick Start course but goes that much further: you will be able to gain real confidence in the key skill areas of boxing, kettle bells and wild running, you will have more opportunity to use your new-found energy with extra fun activities and will really see and feel the difference in your body.

This course includes the following:

An initial 15 minute assessment with our coaches that records performance parameters including body composition, specific movement patterns and running; a 15 minute follow up explanation and guidance through the individualised exercises prescribed as a result of this assessment; a 15 minute reassessment at the end of the course; an information CD to take away with before and after footage of your movement patterns, posture and running plus photos and information on workouts you will learn on the course; 2 - 3 training sessions per day; 5 workshops covering movement, metabolism & nutrition; 2 massages; group sessions of stretching/ flexibility; 1 full day and 1 morning off; small group swimming tips session; optional extra boxing small group sessions; regular barefoot running instruction and drills; all food, transport and accommodation.

During the three day break you are welcome to stay at Baraka House and relax - there are no activities during that time and many people decide to go on a short safari and really enjoy the break and change of scene. The exact therapies and skills on offer will vary between courses depending on the team.

Nature & Kind Factor

Our Trusted Partner's Responsible and Sustainable Travel Policy

The health of the body, your community and the environment are inter-related. Wildfitness wants to be part of moving towards greater health not just in the body but also to expand this to the surrounding community and the planet.

Some of our key policies are:

Local Community

• Where ever possible we prioritise employing local staff and this includes many local contract staff as well as permanent staff. We are currently training four local trainers and send our senior staff on annual training courses.
• Wildfitness ensures that the wage provides a high standard of living for the area and enough to cover school fees for two children. This is not equivalent to salaries in the UK but is well above minimum wages in Kenya and those in equivalent industries. We also provide medical support to our staff.
• We sponsor our local fitness trainer to compete in national running events several times a year.

Conservation

• Wildfitness gives a monthly donation to Watamu turtle conservation, as well as being a member of the Watamu association.
• Everytime a guest enters one of Watamu’s parks or reserves (on average 3 times / week) $10 is paid on their behalf to the parks. This amounts to over $1000 a month to the local parks.
• At other key locations in our training schedule we pay the local communities a fee of £1.50 per head each time we use them.

Energy, Water & Waste

• Wildfitness uses energy saving light bulbs.
• Most of our activities are outdoors so the need for power and fuel is relatively small.
• We use salt water for flush toilets and hand-washing laundry plus catch rain water from the roof and store it in large tanks for use in the house.
• We have a compost system so that any biodegradable waste can be used in the garden.

Local Sourcing

• Wildfitness sources its food locally and organically where possible (where produce has to come from further afield it is transported by road not air).
• We choose our local produce carefully, for example our crabs are only bought if they are over a certain size so as not to take out the young population
