Tour Overview

Day in the Life on Safari

A Typical Day on a Luxury Safari
Awake to a soft knock on your door and the smell of your freshly brewed coffee awaiting you outside your tent or chalet. Listen to the quiet morning sounds of Africa. Enjoy your coffee and a few biscuits to tide you over for your early morning game drive.

This morning you will enjoy a 3 hour game drive through the bush with your expert guide to find the wildlife. On your drive, you see giraffe, rhino, zebra, impala, gemsbock, warthog and elephants.

When you return from your drive, a large “English” breakfast will be waiting for you. Eat in the open air dining area and use your newly trained eyes to spot more wildlife, while you dine on perfectly cooked eggs, sausages, bacon, fruits, breads, more coffee, and other splurges. Retire to your private tent or chalet to relax and finally read that book on your beautiful deck.

It’s 3 o’clock and time for High Tea. Lots more splurges here as your tummy surprisingly feels empty again. Gather up your cameras for your evening game drive. Time for elephant, leopard and wild dog. During your drive, your guide will stop to offer snacks and drinks while you watch the sunset over the African bush. Capture the African sunset on film because it will bring tears to your eyes long after your journey.

It will be dark when you return from your evening game drive. You will have time to freshen up for dinner. I hope you are hungry. The chef has prepared some “wild” options as well as some traditional ones too. Fine South African wines will be paired expertly with your dinner choices. The staff will anonymously turn down your bed so that it is oh, so inviting when you return from dinner. Sleep tonight as you never have, with dreams of the peaceful and serene African bush.

An area of history and legend, offers some of the most excitinggame viewing in Africa. It is a place of exceptional beauty where one can explore therugged, unspoilt African landscapes either in the comfort of open 4-wheel drive vehicles,on a walking safari, on mountain bicycles, or horse back, guided by expert rangers and
experienced trackers. In addition to the game experience, Mashatu offers a view ofAfrica, unchanged since the days of early visitors such as Kipling, Selous and
artist/explorer Sir Thomas Baines. Historic and archaeological sites abound; notable are the Motloutse Ruins and the Pitsani Koppie sites.

The excitement of Mashatu has not changed over time. It is still home to large herds of elephant, prides of lion and cheetah. Along the river courses, huge Mashatu trees
provide shade for eland, impala, wildebeest, giraffe and zebra, whilst at night, the bateared fox, African Wildcat and the magnificent leopard search for prey. Some 366
species of birds may be seen. Mashatu Game Reserve proudly provides a refuge for the largest, single population of elephant on privately owned land in Africa. Known as the
relic herds of Shashe, these elephants are the last living testament to the great herds that once populated the meandering Limpopo valley. Today, the population on Mashatu
Game Reserve alone, is estimated to number in excess of 500.

The camp offers 14 tastefully and authentically decorated suites. Each suite is furnished with two three-quarter beds, a day bed, expansive en suite bathroom with shower, bath,
his and hers basins, and a second W.C.. A private lounge area overlooks the unfenced surrounding bush and 24 hour temperature control completes the comfort of each suite.
Mashatu Main Camp is elevated around a waterhole and offers excellent game viewing opportunities from within the camp itself. The dining area, stunning day lounge and "Gin
Trap" bar provide diverse lookouts from which to enjoy and appreciate the environment.

Tswalu:
Surrounding the rugged Koranneberg Mountains in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, Twswalu Kalahari Reserve covers 1000 square kilometers of land on the edge of
the mysterious desert wilderness that is the Kalahari. Tswalu is home to some of the world’s most fascinating wildlife. Free from malaria and other tropical diseases, Tswalu
Kalahari Reserve boasts 70 species of mammal, including desert black rhino, sable and roan antelope. Tswalu is the historical home of the San, whose storytelling and dream
imagery can be seen at the many archaelogical sites found in this unique private game reserve.

Nature & Kind Factor

Our Trusted Partner's Responsible and Sustainable Travel Policy

The incredible holiday Hills of Africa plans for you is only half the story. The tourism providers we choose, operate pro-active programs that make a significant impact on the lives of the locals, the nearby communities and the environment in which they operate. You may meet someone like Dimas, who started as a gardener speaking just a few words of English. Thanks to classes and training offered by the safari lodge and a policy to promote employees from within, Dimas is now a fully licensed safari guide. Or perhaps you will visit the village of Polangwe during your time in the Madikwe Game Reserve. Here, you will be greeted by enthusiastic smiles from the children that are ecstatic about their brand new playground, courtesy of Royal Madikwe Safari Lodge. Should you travel to Cape Town, you musn't miss a whale watching tour with Dyer Island Cruises, who is spear-heading a program to build penguin houses on Dyer Island for the severely endangered African penguins struggling to shelter their eggs and chicks because the guano (bird feces) in which they used to burrow their eggs was harvested years ago by locals to make fertilizer.

The companies we choose for your travel go beyond minimizing the negative impacts of tourist activities. They recognize tourism is a powerful agent for change and invest in people that might have been unemployed or stuck in menial jobs. They think out-of-the-box and create policies and practices that are valuable investments in the future. When you see the evidence, your travel experience is taken to another level. It becomes a travel journey that leaves a gentle, but lasting and inspirational footprint in your memory.
