Tour Overview
Embark on the voyage of a lifetime, sailing the earth’s mightiest river — the Amazon. The first true luxury vessel in the region, the M/V Aqua caters to the most discriminating and adventurous of world travelers, providing an unforgettable journey into areas penetrated by only a privileged few. Each day will bring amazing new wonders, as guests set out with guides in a fleet of three launches to float toward the source of the mighty Amazon. Each day, you will explore the small inlets and various winding river systems that make up the flooded forest. Visitors will have the opportunity to see hundreds of species, including the endangered pink Amazon dolphin, three toed sloth, and howler monkey.
LocationContinent or Region: South AmericaCountry or State/County: PeruAs the M/V Aqua skirts the edges of the Pacaya Samiria Reserve, located on the headwaters of the Amazon basin, you will become one of only a handful of seasoned world travelers ever to have reached this remote, remarkably beautiful destination. Pacaya Samiria spans more than five million acres, making it twice the size of Yellowstone Park—and it is rich with wildlife and aquatic life. In winter, when the river is high, visitors can explore the small inlets and various winding river systems that make up the Reserve’s flooded forest. In summer, the river recedes and beautiful sandy river beaches form. Only about 30,000 people live in this vast tract of land. You will have the chance to meet some of them. In addition, park rangers will show you some of the conservation and sustainability projects that are part of this vast reserve. Activities
As your ship docks along the river, knowledgeable and experienced naturalists will take you, via small launches, into remote estuaries in the Peruvian rain forest and the Pacaya Samiria Reserve. As you explore these pristine wilderness areas teeming with wildlife, you will also encounter local people living in villages as they have for centuries. And when the day’s sightseeing is over, the comforts of your luxurious floating hotel will await you.
The following guide will lead the tour Fifty-five years ago, his ancestors migrated from the upper Amazon to Iquitos to provide their children with better education and life standards. Usiel was born in Iquitos when most of it was forest and it wasn't urbanized at all. His love for nature started at early age when he used to help his father at fishing and collecting fruits in this unexplored environment where he observed the most amazing species and their interaction with the rest of the world. As a curious and talkative teenager he started to learn English to communicate with foreigners and learn more about other cultures. Usiel has been working in Tourism for 19 years as a tour guide for the main lodges and cruise companies in the area. He has also assisted scientists and researchers from WWF, Nature Conservancy, Smithsonian, etc. His vast knowledge of the area, complemented with biology research and his kind and patient personality makes him the perfect companion for this once-in-a-lifetime journey.

What you see along the river depends on the length of your stay. The heart of every visit, however, will be Pacaya Samiria Reserve. The highlight of each day’s journey will be the pristine wilderness areas teeming with wildlife and amazing plant life, such as the colossal Victoria Regia water lilies. You will also encounter—and have the chance to interact with—local people living in villages as they have for centuries. When the day’s sightseeing is over, the comforts of your luxurious floating hotel await you.
ItineraryDay 1 Your guides await you, as your flight from Lima glides in for landing at Iquitos International Airport. After you’ve claimed your luggage, you will board an air-conditioned bus and transfer to Iquitos’ main wharf. Before dinner we will perform a routine safety drill. Peruvian cuisine is considered one of the world’s best. Here it is presented with a touch of European flair, and a vegetarian dish is always available. Raise a glass of fine South American wine to toast the beginning of a beautiful journey, then look out the window and watch the river go by as you experience your first wonderful meal aboard the M/V Aqua. Perhaps enjoy a nightcap on the Upper Deck, under the stars, before retiring.
Day 2 This morning you will travel from the Amazon through the Huaysi short-cut canal to explore the Tahuayo black water river. Upon arrival at Charo Lake, you can bait your hooks to try to catch one of Amazonia’s fearsome piranhas. Enjoy lighter mid-day fare in our air-conditioned dining room. In the afternoon, enjoy a excursion to Yacapana Islands, as the sun sets, you will have the chance to see and photograph both gray and pink freshwater dolphins. We will return to the M/V Aqua vessel and continue our journey upstream, toward the headwaters of the Amazon River.
Day 3 Today you have two options:
Enjoy a Full-Day Excursion with a Picnic Lunch Travel by skiff from Yanayacu Creek all the way to remote Chingana. On this excursion, you will see howler and capuchin monkeys, the squirrel-sized monkeys called tamarins, pink and gray river dolphins, and a vast variety of birds, and will learn first-hand about the important medical value of jungle plants. Or enjoy a Guided Jungle Walk to learn all about sustainable resource management projects in Amazonia. You will visit one of the projects, where villagers are planting palms to obtain oil. The ranger may also show you the artificial nests created on the sand to protect turtle eggs. Lunch, followed by a Siesta. Late afternoon expedition to see the two different kinds of freshwater dolphins—including the unusual pink ones—found in the Amazon. Dinner. In the evening, we will take the skiffs out in search of caimans, tree boas, tarantulas, and frogs. After this night adventure, the M/V Aqua will start sailing downstream on the Marañon River, toward the headwaters of the Amazon.
Day 4 Rise early and be on your skiffs at 5:30 a.m. to view one of the great spectacles of the Southern Hemisphere: the sun rising over the birthplace of the Amazon River. Breakfast. Then, we will travel by skiff to Puerto Miguel native village, where you can meet and interact with local villagers from this most remote part of the world, and can learn a bit more about their culture, traditions, and folklore. Return to the M/V Aqua. Lunch. Disembarkation. Step off the M/V Aqua in the small city of Nauta, where your air-conditioned bus awaits you. Enjoy a 1 1/2-hour drive through the Peruvian countryside, before arriving at Iquitos International Airport to board your flight to Lima. On our way to the airport, we will visit the Manatee Rescue Center where biologists and volunteers take care of endangered Amazon manatees and dolphins who have been seized by conservation authorities from locals or fishermen. Biologists will give you a presentation on the project and it efforts to help these helpless mammals and you will have the opportunity to observe how these animals are taken care of and prepared for future re-introduction into their natural habitat. Finally, we will stop at the San Juan Amazonian Indian Market, for a last chance to shop for local crafts.
When arriving at Iquitos International airport, your guides will assist you with your baggage and check-in, and will wait with you until you are ready to board your flight to Lima.

Nature & Kind Factor
Our sewage treatment tank takes waste through three treatment stages.
Stage 1 – Aeration This allows the bacteria in the waste to grow and muliply, using the sewage as their food supply. This action reduces the quantity and size of the solid matter. Stage 2 – Clarification In the clarification chamber, the bacterial materal is separated from the treated water, which is now clear and free from solids. Stage 3 – Disinfection Now, the liquid must be disinfected, to kill any disease-causing bacteria, before it can be discharged into the rivers. This final stage is done in the Chlorination Chamber. The constant supply of waste flows through three chambers, using a process of direct displacement. Each time new sewage flows into the aeration chamber, an equal amount is pushed in the Charification and Chlorination Chambers, and is then sent out into the river. No internal sewage pumps are needed. We are committed to keeping our rivers clean and beautiful, for today and for generations to come. Our Trusted Partner's Responsible and Sustainable Travel Policy
Aqua Expeditions is truly dedicated to preserving the glorious, but environmentally threatened, Amazon Basin. While regulations are very loose regarding sewage disposal in Amazonia—and in fact we are the only vessel operating on the Amazon to have a sophisticated sewage treatment plant—we believe that proper sewage treatment plays a crucial role in protecting the health of the people and wildlife that live along our rivers. One way to do that is through careful, meticulous waste management. All waste is treated onboard the vessel, in fully contained storage tanks. The result is 100% clean, sterile water that can safely be discharged into the rivers of the Amazon Basin. Our waste storage tanks comply fully with IMO and U.S. Coast Guard standards. In fact, we are doing much more than local regulations require, to show our genuine commitment to environmentally responsible tourism.
