The Earth Spa comprises a cluster of nine buildings, which appear to be floating on ponds. These include four treatment rooms with private outdoor Jacuzzi, two steam rooms, the meditation cave, relaxing area offering fresh juices, and the reception area. The earth domes are designed with openings low to the outside water, allowing refreshing breezes and energy flows to enter the buildings. Openings at the top of each building provide natural ventilation.

The Earth Spa by Six Senses is located right beside the newly opened Six Senses Hideaway Hua Hin and offers guests of the Hideaway a comprehensive menu of specialty treatments that focus on Skin Food - the commitment that nothing should be put onto the skin that could not be eaten. The skin food concept is combined with the four elements of nature represented in the spa: earth - the construction material; water - surrounding the buildings; air - natural ventilation; and fire - used in heat treatments such as hot stones, steam and sauna, herbal compresses and body wraps. In balance to these elements are philosophies of traditional medicine, such as Ayurveda and Chinese, providing spa experiences to naturally enhance the skin food treatments, balanced cuisine, lifestyle activities and workshops available from the Earth Spa menu.

Many of the ingredients used in the treatments are grown right at the Six Senses Hideaway. These include rice, coconut, avocado, papaya, lime, aloe vera, cucumber, pandanus leaf, lemongrass, ginger, galangal, candlenut and turmeric; and all freshly harvested.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL SUSTAINABLE POLICY

Many tourists seek a sustainable destination as well as travel preferences. Therefore, effective resort management policies and operator responsibility are required by the customer's decision. Standard and performance of our resort focuses on sustainable energy, waste and water savings by implementing sustainability criteria into operating processes and procedures.

We are committed to reducing the environmental and social impacts of its activities. Its core purpose is to create innovative and enriching experiences in a sustainable environment. We are committed to sustainable development, specifically the protection and regeneration of both the environment and communities in which we operate. Through the development and implementation of our Holistic Environmental Management Programme, we are committed to monitoring and continually improving our sustainability through both construction and operation:

* To reduce resource consumption and waste generation through responsible waste-reducing purchasing policies, composting programmes, and the waste minimization approach (reduce, reuse, and recycle).
* To responsibly manage energy use and to seek renewable energy sources, as well as eliminate activities that produce green houses gas and carbon emission by implementing alternative efficient energy.
* To responsibly manage and protect water resources.
* To promote awareness of sustainability amongst hosts, guests, local communities and suppliers/business partners through training programmes, regular environmental awareness events and engaging business partners.
* To contribute 0.5% of revenues to projects which benefit both the local and global community and environment.
* To address the issue of climate change through both energy management as part of its resource management policies and avoidance of fugitive emissions of CFCs.
* To regularly monitor our environmental impact, developing action plans through regular environmental meetings and monitoring of Key Sustainability Indicators.
* To prevent any escape of hazardous substances into the environment and to phase out environmentally damaging products as soon as benign alternatives are practicable.
* To preferentially purchase local, environmentally friendly, socially responsible products, especially organic and fair trade products.
* To strictly avoid the use of animal products derived using unnecessarily cruel or environmentally destructive production methods or those derived from any endangered species.
* To enhance and maintain environmental quality, remain original plant species, protect ecosystem - mangrove forest, beach forest, and coastal marine resources.
* To strongly forbid any animal harassment activities, such as animal riding, hunting, fishing.
* To engage local communities and actively employ local staff and service providers wherever practicable.
* To support traditional festive or other occasions concerning as cultural and heritage of local community.
* To integrate social and environmental concerns into planning and decision-making processes.
* To generate host self-recognition and ownership towards social and environmental responsibility.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

Here are some sustainable approaches towards resort operations followed by Six Senses Holistic Environmental Responsibility.

Energy Efficiency

Housekeeping and laundry are areas where a large amount of water and energy are used: energy to heat the water, run the machines, dry and iron the clothes. We use sunlight to heat and dry towels, reducing electricity consumption from using a dryer. There are guidelines for all hosts to follow to help better the environment.

* Switch off all equipment when leaving offices (air condition, computer screen, etc.).
* Turn off air conditioning and lights during lunch.
* Replace efficient light bulbs under coconut trees around resort by using 20 watt light bulb instead of 120 watt. Old 60 watt bed side lamps were replaced by 40 watt.
* Using recycled paper, use of envelopes is not encouraged
* Increase recycling - we can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year by recycling just half of household waste.
* Closing the walk-in freezer door properly in main kitchen. Walk into the freezer room less to take food out where possible.
* Adjust thermostat - adjusting the thermostat down 2 degrees in winter and up 2 degrees in summer, can save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year with this simple adjustment.
* In guest's room, if the door is not closed properly after 5 minute the air conditioner will be turned off automatically by an energy efficiency thermostat.
* Reduce the use of air-conditioning at staff canteen and library.
* Always close and switch of lights and air conditioning when not in use.
* Turn off electronic devices - simply turning off television, DVD player, stereo and computer when not in use will save thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
* It takes a great deal of energy to heat water. Use less hot water by using a low flow showerhead (350 pounds of CO2 saved per year).
* Re-used cooking oil for the purpose of flambeau and fixing mud walls.
* Each room, villa, and outlet provides natural ventilation.
* Avoid leaving water taps running, especially hot-water taps. Heating water causes a great deal of pollution because it requires much energy.

Chemical Control

In housekeeping and laundry, a certain amount of detergents are required. We try to minimise energy and chemicals use through implementation of eco-friendly procedures and products. Biodegradable washing detergents and cleaning substances are used in laundry and housekeeping operations. The cleaning product company provides environmental solutions or components, and offers non-toxic chemicals, biodegradable and biological based formulations, and consulting services on eco-friendly cleaning program. Therefore, the chemical products used in laundry must have a minimum impact on the environment. Laundry staff are educated on more efficient working habits and are not allowed to come into direct contact with any chemical.

Waste Management and Waste Minimization

A waste management practice is implemented to minimize the impacts of waste on the environment. The procedure includes reducing, re-using, re-cycling and disposing of waste appropriately. Waste is systematically disposed by the appropriate channels. Paper, glass, aluminum, plastic and metal is recycled. We reuse old bed sheets for wrapping cloth and laundry bags. However, there are some things which we cannot dispose of safely in this area, for example batteries and any electronic waste. These are often mixed with other rubbish, where they either end up being incinerated or buried. In either case, they release very toxic chemicals into the air and water. We have switched to rechargeable batteries to reduce electronic waste.

Only wet garbage from the kitchen is used in animal husbandry purposes such as the pig raising farm. Organic waste from garden goes through recycling process by allowing it to decompose, after a couple months it turns into natural soil conditioner and fertilizer in the resort's garden and vegetation projects. Only small amounts of waste is delivered to the municipal landfill.

Water Management

Freshwater supply in the resort mainly comes from tap water and ground water. Water efficient techniques are installed in showers and toilets. Implementing a float adjusting technique decreases the water level of storage tanks in guest restrooms. The result is water is saved through flushing. In addition, we encourage our hosts and guests to reduce water consumption. No threads from water pollution discharge into ocean and no treated water is released into natural streams. Treated water from the water treatment plant is re-injected into man-made ponds and streams around the resort. Plants, vegetation and the garden are watered using treated water. Water is slowly absorbed into the ground and stored in a natural aquifer.

Organic Vegetable Garden

The resorts are also taking policy in a new direction by combining organic gardening using permaculture principals and an on-site recycling program. An organic raised bed garden is being built using a combination of recycled materials. The results may surprise you. The idea is to use the area as an educational tool for the local community to demonstrate that the concept of waste is essentially a question of perception. We are experimenting building beds using old beer bottles, wine bottles, mud bricks and aluminum cans to grow a range of different organic vegetables (yard long beans, chillis, buttercrunch, lolla rossa, oak leaf and cos lettuces as well as rocket and a range of herbs). So rest assured if you feel like having another bottle of wine or a few more beers you will be contributing to a good cause. Another interesting aspect to the garden is the direct comparisons we can draw between conventional organic garden beds drawing its goodness from our home made compost and mulches and our state of the art hydroponic raft system fed by a nutrient solution.

Mushroom Hut

At the edge of the main walkway through the garden there is a wooden door leading into the fungal kingdom - a mushroom cultivation hut where we grow oyster and woodear mushrooms on sawdust for use in the kitchens and the staff canteen. Once the mushrooms have extracted the cellulose and lignin from the wood the resulting rich compost is then used in the garden as mulch.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

In terms of Social Responsibility program, a part from activity conducted by the resort we also contribute money, manpower, any kind of support as much as possible to local NGOs, government agency, local school, community to reach their achievements. Additionally, we also encourage our hosts interact with these environment and community's activities. Listed below are some selected contributions.

1. Kevorkian Foundation
Since January 2001, Baan Nor Giank is committed to assisting HIV positive babies and children. Apart from our other social responsibility programs, we financially sponsor the foundation from guest donations and twice a year the children come to stay at the resort for a week - our hosts love these children and the children remember many of us each time they return.

2. Deaf and Mute hosts
Following Equal Employment Opportunity Statement, we provide an opportunity to all applicants for employment and to all hosts throughout their careers. According to our core values, we display fairness and integrity, and foster mutual trust and care in our dealings with our hosts, our business partners and our clients. There are currently seven deaf and mute hosts working in laundry and Food and Beverage departments.

3. Traditional Long Tail Boat Competition
We support for traditional long tail boat competition wining the cup given by Her Royal Princess Sirinthorn, 2006. The objectives are to inherit Thai culture, solidification of the community, to enhance a good relationship between villages, and also support the Thailand tourism industry.

4. Local Student Scholarship
We give opportunity to local students in Pak Num Pran School who lack sufficient financial support or funds to complete their studies through the sixth year of secondary school (M.6). Students have good behaviors and study skills and participate in extra activities such as playing musical instruments, environmental conservation school's club, sports, etc.

5. Cultural Conservation
We offer job opportunities to local students to perform Thai classical dance and music during breakfast and dinner.

6. Mangrove Forest Conservation
Our eco-representative joins mangrove forest plantation projects with university students from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. We also provide lunch boxes for all participants.

7. Youth against drug project
Support a special provincial police detachment Prachuabkirikan province on football competition among schools and community nearby in police's area.

8. Building Libraries and Toilets in Schools
We contribute money for library and toilet construction. Evason in association with the Hua Hin Hotelier Club donate money to Baan Wang Koi School at Hua Hin.

9. Earth Day 2005
We assisted by providing recycling bins to Sam Roi Yod National park.

10. Vetiver Grass (Yah Fakk) Cultivation in Preu Noi Village
Vetiver grass is a kind of grass that has roots 2-3 meters long, helping to protect soil fertility and collect humidity.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Enhancing environmental awareness by sustainable tourism approaches.

Our resort supports the preservation of natural and cultural heritage. The Kingfisher River Trip is one of our eco activities. We promote our guests to enjoy the virgin beauty of the local scenery aboard the "Kingfisher", Thailand's first and to date only Electrically Propelled Thai Long Boat. With zero noise and air pollution and operating in complete silence, guests witness the magnificent flora and fauna of the Pak Num Pran and Pran Buri areas.

Khao Sam Roi Yod National Park, Pranburi Forest Park located in Klongkao-Klongkob National Reserve Forest, Pala-U Waterfall along a creek stretching to the Burmese border, and Kaeng Krachan National Park are all places where we introduce eco-tourism in addition to raising guest awareness by learning and experiencing nature.

Cultural Awareness

Traditional Thai ceremonies such as Song Kran Day - the Thai New Year Celebration, and Loy Kra Thong Day, are celebrated and the nations culture is highlighted, allowing guests to learn Thai traditions.

How guests can contribute efforts?

The 'Little Green Book' or Green Compendium is placed in guest's room as another tool to deliver our environmental efforts and information guests.

Guests are invited to cocktail evenings where they can discuss environmental and social issues with the social and environment officer. Our social and environmental scope of work includes particular activities involving local community. There is one example of how guests have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback.

Butler, GROs (Guest Relation Officer) and Room Attendants carry messages direct to our guests. For example, when we send a letter about mangrove forest plantation activity conducted nearby the resort. This is one way we bring opportunity to guests to contribute their support and attend resort's conservation projects.

One area where guests can help is by reducing the amount of laundry in order to save water and detergent usage. Guests are asked to leave the towels hanging if they would like to use them again, and leave them on the floor if they would like them replaced. With the bed sheets, guests are asked leave the bronze palm tree on the bed, so that we know they are happy to use the same sheets the following day.

Guests are encouraged to make their contributions by donation. A donation letter lists various organizations and asks guest for their support to help better the quality of life of people who are less fortunate than others and to help improve the environment.

Capacity Development Programme

Human resources are an important part of the education and implementation of policies and procedures. Understanding, training and then changing perceptions and practices requires a great deal of time and effort. Therefore, every host undertakes the Six Senses Mandatory Environmental Awareness training which includes the Green Module - a general introduction to the importance of environmental conscience. Generally, hosts must be trained how to deal with waste separation, composting, water saving and energy saving. In addition, social and environmental information is posted on the notice boards in the staff canteen.
