Tour Overview
Few conversations about "classic" rafting trips go much further than talking about the Grand Canyon. This is one of the worlds' best rafting trips, not just for the 226 miles of rafting, but also for the side hikes up canyons and to ancient Indian ruins.
For those of you who have seen the Grand Canyon from the rim, that in itself is a stunning experience, set amidst gorgeous granite and marble walls. We camp on spectacular beaches with just the sound of the Colorado River in the background to send us to sleep. We visit ancient Indian ruins high above the Grand Canyon river and view the scenic beauty of this canyon. We run the rapids that Major John Powell ran in this gorge in the late 1800's in wooden dories. Similar boats are still in use in the Grand Canyon! We are amazed at the cleanliness of the campsites and absolute beauty of this area... There is frequently a two year waiting list for a commercial rafting trip and up to 12 years for a private rafting trip. We are so happy to have this departure and very much hope you will be able to join us. YOUR SAFETY Rafting has long been plagued by the myth that it is dangerous, extreme and only for adrenaline junkies. Rafting is our profession, so we take it seriously. We are serious about safety, about good food, good times and serious about fun! We offer trips to suit all ages and abilities - it is not about fitness, Rafting is about fun. Our youngest white water rafting client to date was 6 years old, and our most mature was a 73 year old blind chap, who did a 7-day Zambezi white water rafting trip! (He was not into the scenery, but loved getting wet). Your safety on our rafting trips is our number one priority on and off the river. Without exception we believe in safety kayakers on all rafting trips. In addition, on our more challenging rafting trips we utilize a safety cataraft. Our biggest safety feature are our world-class, certified, professional rafting guides – you will appreciate the difference that they make. We have a comprehensive first aid kit and all our guides are trained in Wilderness First Aid. We also carry satellite phones on all of our trips and we were the first rafting company to do this. With our enviable safety record we are at the forefront of the white-water industry with our constant training and innovative safety procedures. GOURMET FOOD At the end of a great day rafting on the river, cool après rafting drinks will be served to you along with platters of snacks. You will love sipping your gin and tonic or cold beer amongst spectacular surroundings. Nothing tastes better than a delicious meal cooked by your rafting guide, who transforms into a fantastic riverside chef in the evening. (River rafting guides actually think of themselves as cooks and cleaners who raft to work each day). You will be amazed at just what will be whipped up out of the raft’s coolers. We cater for all dietary preferences as long as you let us know! OUR EQUIPMENT We believe high quality rafting equipment makes for a safer and more comfortable rafting trip for you, the client. When rafting on the river you’ll wear high flotation Americas Cup life jackets and sturdy helmets and on our cooler trips, wetsuits and waterproof spray jackets. Off the river, with your gin and tonic in hand, we believe camping should be civilized. Stay cool in the shade under large tarps, lounging in comfy thermorest seats, chatting with your fellow adventurers. You will sleep well in quality tents, on thick thermorests. We use AVON self-bailing rafts, specifically designed for paddle rafting, which means you as a paddler are stable and comfortable. We find most of our guests have in their posession everything that is needed for a river trip and little if anything needs to be purchased on your part for the trip. If you want to see what gear we recommend for your destination, please go to the page outlining that trip and click the "What You Should Bring" tab. LocationActivities
Rafting is just the vehicle to gain access to this wonderful canyon. You'll raft some fantastic fun white water. But this is just a small part of this trip, with spectacular hikes into remote canyons to see a fossil several hundred thousand years old, or to climb out of the canyon a little to gain some perspective on the size of the Natural Wonder. We visit Indian ruins and see how these people lived many years ago when they first settled this area. You'll sample wonderful cuisine and we'll spend our nights camped on expansive white sandy beaches, checking out the view from our "million star hotel."
Guiding and support
Our team of guides have a fascinating understanding of this area, from the geology to the lesser known hikes on the trip.
The following guides will lead the tourHamish McMaster After his 20 years rafting rivers to every corner of the world, Hamish loves nothing more than to get out on river rafting trips with his clients.
Hamish is proud of his team and his rafting company, who are all "living their rafting dreams" and sharing that philosophy with all who join them. Hamish's favourite river rafting trips: Zanskar River "Ever since I have been a kid, running rivers has been part of my life. I love the escapism a river brings not only to me,, but the great people that accompany us on our trips. This year we'll be making our first trip to India and running the majestic Zanskar River. Rivers are such important arteries in the world, and this trip is no exception. You'll see sights on this trip, that you would not be able to see by any other means than travelling with a raft. We'll trek to Buddhist Monasteries and journey downstream to the Indus river, giving this wonderful country her name." The Mighty Zambezi "The Zambezi for me is one of the classic river trips the world has to offer. The big warm water, spectacular beaches and stunning scenery make it unique. Sitting watching water tumble over a Grade Six waterfall from our camp, enjoying a Gin and Tonis is not a bad way to finish off you day! Africa really gets into your soul. Its a wonderful experience, so much so, my wife and I married on the Zambezi 2 years ago." Country of Origin - New Zealand Stan Ricketts Just the mere size of Stan will inspire confidence in you. But size isn’t everything!
Stan grew up in Africa, and has an absolute love of animals, nature and the environment. He is the master of culinary surprises and organizing your perfect rafting trip. After training up on the Tugela river in South Africa, Stan has traversed the world primarily under paddle power. He runs our rafting trips superbly from start to finish in USA, Ethiopia, Chile, Nepal, Turkey and Zambia. Stan's Favourite river rafting trips: The Mighty Zambezi "I think its pretty special to be able to take some like minded folks from around the globe on one of WBN's trips. They all offer something just a little bit different, I guess thats why so many of them come back for another trip. For me though, having lunch in the Boiling Pot under Victoria Falls has to be one of the coolest places to start a river trip. You know you have seven fun filled days ahead of you, great white water, awesome beaches, great wildlife and plenty of stories." Tamur River "I have been going back to Nepal now for over 10 years. Its a place that has the most intriguing culture and people and some amazing white water as well. The Tamur for me is the complete river expedition. Our clients have little idea until they start this trip what an amazing journey this is. Its great that we walk into the river with 70-80 porters and experience their culture and way of life on the way. Once we hit the river... its a full on rollercoaster that gets everyone stoked that they are here!" Country of Origin - South Africa Reviews

The Colorado River has fun filled rapids that everyone can take part in. Highlights are Hermit and Lava. There are literally hundreds of rapids on this white water rafting river. Our rafting guides have incredible knowledge of this rafting trip, some have run this trip more than 150 times. Their passion for the environment and geology is plain to see.
ItineraryDay 1 | Start of your rafting adventure You’ll be met on arrival at Flagstaff airport, Arizona by our trip leader who will take you to your centrally located historic hotel. Flagstaff is typical small town America but has a number of fantastic restaurants and bars to explore at your leisure, or perhaps you might just like to catch up on a few hours sleep. We will have a pre-departure meeting prior to dinner and pass out some equipment for your trip. This will be your last chance to purchase any last minute items for your trip.
No meals included
Day 2 | Rafting instruction and practice After breakfast we will take the gorgeous drive to our rafting put in point at Lees Ferry, just below Glen Canyon dam. You’ll be outfitted with the remainder of the equipment, given a full and comprehensive safety talk as well as paddle instructions. Days 3 to 14 | Rafting heaven! Every day's rafting on the canyon brings something different. Whether it is visiting the incredible “Redwall Cavern” or hiking up to the Anasazi Indian ruins, the vistas you will have on your trip are unforgettable.
The hikes on this trip are broken up by world-class white water rafting rapids such as Hermit, Crystal and Lava Falls. On top of these big rapids, this river rafting trip abounds with 226 miles of wavetrains and fun filled rafting sections. As we’ll be taking paddle rafts with stern assist (the guide will sit on the back of your raft with oars) you’ll actively participate in your navigating some of the best whitewater in the world. Our knowledgeable rafting guides will give you the best possible practical Geology lesson on the earth’s history as well as checking out fossils that are hundreds of thousands of years old. Every evening we’ll pull into a suitable spectacular white sandy beach for an incredible feast of steaks, fish, chicken and salads along with the customary beer or glass of wine to discuss your day in depth. This is living. Many people never get to sample the beauty of the Grand Canyon from within…. For those of you who have seen it from the rim, that in itself is a stunning experience, set amidst gorgeous granite and marble walls, we sleep on beaches with just the river in the background to send us to sleep. We visit ancient Indian ruins high above the river and view the scenic beauty of this canyon. We run the rapids and see where Major John Powell ran this gorge in the late 1800’s in wooden dories. Similar boats are still in use in the Canyon today! There is ample time to adjust to river life during the rafting trip. You wont need watches, cellphones or to worry about anything. This trip offers 100% relaxation. We have no “fixed” itinerary for this rafting trip, preferring instead to set ourselves up for hikes and ruins that we can do as a group. This adaptability allows us to remain on our own and away from other groups that may be in the canyon at the same time to us. Included: All meals

Nature & Kind Factor
Paddle and oar powered trips are the most environmentally friendly way to run the Colorado River. We are not fast, but we have the REAL experience. All our waste is taken out and we contribute to the Hualapai Indian Reservation and the Grand Canyon Conservation Fund.
Our Trusted Partner's Responsible and Sustainable Travel Policy
We are a whitewater rafting company, and so the great outdoors is our office and our playground, it is where we work and where we have fun. Most importantly, it is where we entertain our clients on their rafting trips. That is why we keep it clean.
We are environmentally-friendly in as many small ways as possible, eg in our indoor office we prefer emailing instead of letter-writing, recycling everything we are able to recycle, and to make up for anything we cannot recycle (because the recycleman won’t accept it) we plant trees in Chile to offset this. In fact, we plant one tree for every client, so we have quite a small forest on a beautiful piece of land next to one of our favourite rafting rivers. On our rafting trips we do not leave anything behind where we camp – all rubbish is carried out and dealt with at the end of the trip, same with human waste. We leave places as we found them, (sometimes even nicer than when we found them!) Let’s face it, rafting is an environmentally sound way to travel, the only energy needed to propel the boats forward is provided by the river and your arms! To support the local communities, we buy our produce from them along the way, sleep and eat in locally-run establishments where possible, and interact sensibly with tribes on the riverbanks as we believe in positive cultural exchanges so as not to change their lives – this means trade not aid.
