Overview
The charm of the house is that the understated colonial exterior and walled garden do not hint at the luxury and level of comfort that lie within in its thick walls. Glorious dark-wood floors in the sitting & dinning rooms, a well kept garden and state of the art kitchen set the scene in this impressively well-restored colonial mansion.
Upstairs, the bedrooms all have air-conditioning, fans and private bathrooms and fixtures and fittings worthy of a modern luxury hotel (and far better than any hotel locally). Additionally, the master bedroom has a bath, walk-in shower and sauna.
The living space is integrated with the garden and pool and there are areas to eat both inside and out, a dark-blue tiled circular swimming pool, and barbecue area for grilling the catch of the day.Casa Paraty also has its own schooner (available for hire by the day or for the whole stay) which is ideal for touring the remote islands, beaches and tucked-away restaurants that lie in the bays off the coast.
A beautiful house in a relaxing and very Brazilian town almost equidistant from Rio and Sao Paulo, Paraty is a fabulous choice for first time visitors to Brazil.
Paraty is a lovely 17th century town that has been perfectly preserved thanks to a long period of isolation and declared a National Historical Monument in 1966 which has further safeguarded its preservation. The winding, narrow streets paved with giant cobble stones, were designed to protect the town from pirate raids. Small fishermen’s cottages and vast merchants mansions stand side by side, all white stucco with brightly coloured shutters and doors. Vehicles are banned from the old town, and the wealth of art galleries, shops and restaurants are best explored on foot. The old town today buzzes with a good selection of unpretentious bars and restaurants, small shops and galleries that offer of good options to eat out in the evening.
Climate and When to Go Best months are from March to October where there is less rain, although the peak season is still Dec/Jan/Feb, the summer, when it is both hotter and wetter. The increasingly well known literary festival, FLIP, takes place in July. Getting There Paraty is located on the coast almost equidistant between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo both of which can be reached in 3.5 – 4 hours by road. The nearest airports are at Rio de Janeiro (236km) and Sao Paulo (330km). Paraty also has a landing strip big enough to accommodate light aircraft and small jets.
Rental Conditions & Recommendations
Private transfers to and from the house will be provided upon request for extra charge. A pre-booked boat trip to explore the bay is a must. Rentals of less than a week are possible in the Low Season (from 1 March – 15 December).
