Overview
This wonderful, garden estate was formerly the summer home of the rulers of Shahpura and comprises 2 residences with 8 rooms.
The style and décor is very much a mixture of Rajasthani meets colonial, with a quiet, understated yet elegant air. Set in 30 acres of garden and pasture and surrounded by lakes, it is a very special and ultimately peaceful little oasis, situated midway between Jaipur and Udaipur. Very much a family concern, the family all reside there and are more than happy to sit and chat with guests.
With its idyllic and unspoilt rural setting, this is a place to come for at least a couple of nights as it provides a perfect, restful break in an otherwise rather hectic, city-based itinerary. Borrow the bicycles and go cycling around the lakes; go fishing and boating on the lakes; visit the stunning local temple and stepwell; explore the town and see the traditional local artists at work; enjoy a beautiful candlelit dinner in the huge, old palace in town; or have a guided tour of the palace. The walking is excellent and, due to all the water in the area, the birdlife is phenomenal.
ACCESS: is by air to Jaipur, from Delhi, Bombay, Jodhpur, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Calcutta followed by a 4 hour road journey. Or, by train to Jaipur from Delhi, Bombay, Jodhpur, Sawai Madhopur.
It is also an easy drive from Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Pushkar, Deogarh, Narlai, Nimaj, Bundi, Kota, Sawai Madhpur. A longer drive from Jodhpur and Shekavati.
Dining
There is one dining room in the main building where meals are eaten on very cold or very times of year. At other times, dining is al fresco, in the sunshine or candlelit under the stars, in the garden. The cuisine comprises simple Continental, and Indian recipes and is organic whenever possible as much of the vegetables come from their own vegetable garden. The hotel offers a buffet and table d’hote dining. Room service is also readily available. Special private dinners can also be arranged. Smoking is allowed. Indian wine, limited French wine, beer and spirits are available.
Facilities
All rooms are centrally air-conditioned, with overhead fans, and attached bathrooms with bath and shower. On account of the buildings not being purpose built, all rooms vary in shape, size and design. There are rooms on the low floors and there is good wheelchair access. Hot water bottles and heaters are provided on particularly cold nights. Hot water is plentiful and provided by solar heating with electrical backup. “Shahpura Bagh is an aristocratic estate set in 30 acres of peaceful gardens in a lovely location between Jaipur and Udaipur.”
Rooms & Accommodation
8 bedrooms
8 bedrooms
There are 5 suites and 3 standard rooms. 1 suite and 1 standard room are in the main house where the family stays. They are situated on top cfloor and have a glorious, huge terrace all to themselves. It’s furnished with chairs and day beds and privacy is plentiful. The views over the estate are lovely. The rooms in the restored residence have large windows and doors opening out onto the garden. High ceilings and uncluttered bedrooms add to the feeling of space, together with huge, state of the art bathrooms.
The style and décor of Shahpura Bagh is very much a mixture of Rajasthani meets colonial, with a quiet, understated yet elegant air. The emphasis here is on light and openness.
Most of the material used is waste material and the focus is towards implementing environmentally sound practices. For example crazy paving to utilize broke stone tiles, Arras (lime) for flooring, and marble powder which is again waste material.
Solar heating, in an effort to utilize non- conventional energy source. Water is pressurized by pressure pumps and we have a softening and filter unit to ensure purity of bathing water. All water is recycled and redirected to water the lawns and the landscaped grounds.
