Overview

Cuixmala is a stunning estate of 25,000 acres of land, lagoons, and beaches. It is set in lush tropical vegetation on a 3 km. stretch of golden sand beach fronting the Pacific Ocean. The estate’s vast area is a protected habitat for a number of species that otherwise would be unable to survive in the area. A stay at Cuixmala enables the visitors to experience nature in an intimate manner.

Location

North America : Mexico

Cuixmala is located in Mexico, on a shore of the Pacific Ocean. There are 3 stunning private beaches untouched by civilization where guests can relax and enjoy the clear warm water in total privacy:

Playa Cuixmala
This magnificent beach stretches for 2.5 miles and offers the most sensational walks to the river’s estuary. Playa Cuixmala is famous for being the nestling beach for thousand of turtles. This is the only beach, out of the three, within the property. It is in front of Casa La Loma and approximately 4 miles away from the other Villas & Casitas. Not recommended for swimming due to high tide & strong currents.

Caleta Blanca
Sunny white-sand beach nestled in a calm, magical cove with a comfortable dining-sitting-palapa, 2 bathrooms with showers, cooking area. Excellent for swimming snorkelling, sailing, kayaking. A twin-engine Boston Whaler with a boatman is also available upon request to explore the coast line and the nearby islands and for fishing expeditions. You have to drive 30 min off the property to get there.

Playa Escondida
For more adventurous swimmers, Playa Escondida is an idyllic isolated wild beach. The interesting story about its name (hidden), is because is believed that pirates used to hide their treasures inside secret grottos at the beach’s end. It is 30 minutes off the property.

Getting here:
The closest international airports are Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo. The ideal way to arrive is to fly into one of those and then be picked up by a prop plane (can be arranged by Cuixmala) so you can land on the private landing strip. Otherwise, it’s an hour-plus drive from Manzanillo and a twisty drive from Puerto Vallarta (two-and-a-half to three hours). The Cuixmala staff can also assist you renting a car or that someone of their airport contacts pick you up. The property is so big that having a car would be beneficial.

Nature & Kind Factor

The unique experience which one has at Cuixmala reflects the core philosophy of the family which owns the property. First and foremost is a dedication to preserve and protect the natural environment which is done through a variety of ecological programs, then there is the fact that most of the food served at Cuixmala is from their own organic farms.
Cuixmala and the Cuixmala Ecological Foundation carry out various practices and are involved in local and regional initiatives to protect the environment and support the local communities by:

- Encouraging self-sustaining systems using local and renewable resources and diminishing or eliminating the use of non-renewable resources.
- Encouraging and innovating sustainable practices in our organic agriculture, horticulture, orchards and grain production.
- Encouraging and innovating sustainable practices of free range livestock, pigs and sheep.
- Encouraging appropriate and sustainable use of the local environment and with the local and federal government has protected the local wildlife through conservation programs and the banning of hunting.

These practices are supported by:

- Preserving the local watershed.
- Separation and recycling of plastics, glass and paper.
- The use of recyclable crystal bottles for organic shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, bath oil and body lotion instead of packaged plastic containers.
- All organic kitchen waste is recycled for our compost to then use in our orchards and gardens.
- Power-saving light bulbs.

Community Projects and Social Commitments
- Cuixmala employs 90% of local people, a way to support the local communities.
- Schools support (rebuilding and remodeling elementary and junior high schools).
- Support with an English teacher for the elementary schools.
- Maintenance of local roads.
- Cleaning the high way adjacent to the property (from Km 43 to Km 47)
- Environmental education. We maintain a program of talks, conferences, and video presentations on environmental themes, directed at workers employed in activities of agriculture, construction, maintenance and guests services to encourage them to continue conducting and spreading out environmental friendly practices in their families’ homes and their local community.

Foundation
The Cuixmala Ecological Foundation was instrumental in establishing the vast Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve, the first reserve of its kind in Mexico to protect this type of ecosystem and the fourth most important in terms of biodiversity. The Foundation has supported a variety of projects, ranging from habitat conservation (forest and wetlands), threatened species (marine turtles, crocodiles, jaguars, pumas, parrots), and through the application of organic agriculture and forestry plantations as alternatives for sustainable use.

We have restored the few areas within the reserve which were deforested or modified by human activities prior to their incorporation as part of the reserve. These include areas of tropical deciduous and semi-deciduous forest, as well as wetlands.
- Support of organic agriculture and forestry plantations as alternatives for sustainable use.
- Support monitoring programs for threatened and endangered species, climate and hydrology, as well as changes in vegetation cover and land use, which permit us to better understand how to reserve the processes of habitat degradation associated with human activities.
- Conservation of this natural space and landscape to be enjoyed.
- Participation with the distinct local, regional and federal actors involved in the conservation of natural areas and management of natural resources of the region.
- Useful flora studies.
- Pioneers in Mexico in ecology of jaguar and puma
- The turtle protection program has returned more than 500,000 of baby turtles to the sea.

Our Trusted Partner's Responsible and Sustainable Travel Policy

Cuixmala

ECOLOGIICAL FOUNDATIION
The Cuixmala Ecological Foundation was instrumental in establishing the Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere, one of the largest protected areas in Mexico. The Foundation also sponsors research to better understand the all of the inhabitants of the Biosphere and works to preserve the surrounding ecosystem. Today the area around the Cuixmala Estate is home to several endangered species including the jaguar.

TURTLE PROTECTIION
Many years ago Cuixmala began a highly successful turtle protection program. The giant sea turtles return each year to lay their eggs on the Playa Cuixmala where the eggs are gathered by staff to protect them from predators and poachers. Once the baby turtles hatch from the eggs they are returned to the sea. Guests at Cuixmala are able to view and participate in this very rewarding program.
