The property extends along a private white sand beach of over 400 meters lined with palm and almond trees and is ring-fenced at he back by hills covered in thick Atlantic rainforest.

There are 5 suites in the main house accessed off the veranda and just a couple of steps from the beach, inside and outside dinning areas, a sitting room with a large flat screen television, DVD and CD players and a swimming pool. Two further bedrooms are housed in two stand alone villas in the garden which each have their own sitting rooms and ofuro. All rooms are air-conditioned and have ceiling fans, i- pod docs, LCD screen TV’s with cable television channels, DVDs and CD player.

A separate villa houses a gym, sauna (with lovely views through the coconut plantation to the beach) and games area with table tennis and full size snooker tables.

Hammocks a strung outside each bedroom and a several areas along the beach and under the coconut palms and the beach is equipped with sun loungers, beach towels and low drinks tables. Also on the property is a floodlight soccer pitch, a barbecue, a fresh water swimming pool. Two speedboats and a traditional sailing boat are available with the villa and this allows guests to explore the secluded beaches of Ilha Grande or to water ski at leisure from the properties private jetty.

This is a great property for larger groups travelling with children with a huge amount of space, swimming pools, a football pitch and child-friendly beach. The house is not overlooked by any other property and suitable for any guests that value their privacy.

South America : Brazil

Situated 150km south-west of Rio, Ilha Grande is Brazil’s third largest island, stretching over 193km2. The fact that for much of the island’s history until as recently as 1994 it was used as a prison – a sort of Brazilian Devil’s Island – means that despite its location between two of the biggest cities in South America, Ilha Grande remains a true wilderness covered in pristine mata atlantica (native coastal forest), dotted with waterfalls and with over 100 hidden beaches.

There are no roads on the island and the only way to get around is by foot (there is a trail around the whole island; a hike of 5 days) or by boat. The south side of the island is open to the sea and has bigger waves and swell and this is where some of the best surf beaches in the region are located. The northern shore is home to the island’s largest village, Abraao which enjoys an ideal location in a sheltered bay protected from behind by the xxx Mountain and Pico de Papagaio. Then ruins of the islands penitentiaries, the last, Candido Mendes was on destroyed in 1994, are within walking distance from the village. Along this part of the island are beautiful hidden beaches, secluded moorings and handful of tiny restaurants that sailors moor up at to enjoy fresh seafood feasts in splendid isolation.

The island is ideal for wildlife enthusiasts (several species of monkey and over 250 bird species, including rare Macaws inhabit the Atlantic Rainforest) , beach lovers and water sports fanatics, particularly surfers and sailors.

Climate and When to Go

Best months are from March to October where there is less rain, although the peak season is still Dec/Jan/Feb, the summer, when it is both hotter and wetter. October and November can see prolonged rain.

Getting There

Ilha Grande is located 150km SW of Rio de Janeiro which is the nearest major airport, although there is an airport for charter flights at Angra dos Reis (15 minutes away by boat) and the island has its own night-use helipad which takes craft up to 5 tons. Arrival transfers from the mainland (are included) and BBHC will arrange either the land transfer from Rio or the helicopter transfer to the island.

Rental Conditions & Recommendations

Private transfers to Praia do Iguassu from Rio or Sao Paulo will be provided upon request for extra charge by either helicopter or by road. A boat trip to explore Ilha Grande and its many hidden beaches is a must on one day. Rentals of less than a week are possible in the Low Season (from 1 March – 15 December). For sailiers we have one of the most beautiful classic sailing schooners available for charter by the day.
