Dining
When Chef May decided to take the helm at Clayoquot Wilderness Resort 10 years ago, he set about creating an identity for his food. Because the resort started out on a floating barge, with a kitchen the size of a pantry station, he knew he needed a unique vision to help it grow. Chef says the standards set by Vancouver Island farmers can easily compare to the best produce Europe has to offer. Thus, Chef defined his "Modern Natural Cuisine" as a means to pay tribute to his skills, and the incredible array of local ingredients at his fingertips. "Modern" relates to Chef's adaptation of new cooking styles with old school techniques, while keeping the basics taught to him 25 years ago. "Natural" relates to how the food is prepared allowing the pure, natural flavours to come through in the dish. His "Cuisine" is primarily influenced by locally available ingredients. Modern Natural cuisine is an easy way to explain his philosophy of clean, simple, fresh food.
Facilities
Lounge Tents
No true safari, eco or otherwise, would be complete without at least one tent assigned to the pursuit of sensory pleasures like reading, games, lounging and select barrel-aged spirits.
The Resort has two such lounges - a games tent, and a library tent. The former, a plush turn-of-the-century collection of dark polished woods, beautiful fabrics and burnished leather, reference the iconic Gentlemen's Clubs of old. Here, guests lose themselves in the arts of conversation and low-tech competition. Antique furnishings display an impressive collection of antique and contemporary games of chance and skill.
Belying its presentation as an overstuffed country house reading room, the library lounge is in fact an ultra-modern satellite-internet café. A loaded PC stands ready to connect guests to the outside world, and a router permits complimentary wireless internet access via portable computer from anywhere within range.
By design there are no in-room telephones or televisions. The resort communicates with a marine fleet, the Canadian Coastguard and other essential services via a failsafe VHF radio system and a boosted cellular phone is available for emergency calls in the Resort office.
Should you forget a toothbrush, sunscreen, film, batteries, or other personal item, rest assured that the gift shop will have a supply. Packaged post cards, logo wear, hats, First Nations carvings and other items are available for purchase in the retail shop as well.
In your tented accommodations you will find:
Deserving Thyme skin and body care products - Plush terry cotton robes - Exercise sandals/slippers - Plush cotton towels - Earthenware spring water cooler - Clothes hangers & luggage rack - Facial tissue - Electrical outlets - Insect repellent - Air horn (for emergencies) - Butane lighter (for candles & lamps) - Flashlight (in case of generator failure) - Classic books - Stationery, postcards, resort guide - Wildlife directory - Hair Dryers are available for guest use in the shower building areas
Resort Amenities
Guests are encouraged to pack and travel light, so we make sure we have enough top-quality adventure gear to go around. If you absolutely must have that lucky fly rod, or simply cannot ride without your own boots, bring them along. Otherwise, we have you covered at no extra charge.
Business Amenities
- Complimentary wireless internet access for personal portables - Complimentary high-speed internet access via library lounge PC - Full, portable a/v capability for meetings - Large meeting tent plus break-away facilities - Meetings and Retreats services manager.
Weddings
We can help you plan the perfect wedding. A commissioner, photographer, videographer, and florist can be arranged
Personal

Activities
Daily wilderness activities are highly personalized and customized based on each guest's experience level, willingness and desires. This means no "signing up" for particular activities in advance and the ability to choose what you want to do each day. Every evening our Activities Directors will sit with you personally and design your adventures for the next day depending on weather, tidal charts, animal sightings and your willingness to go wild! As Clayoquot specializes in remote experiences, guests may choose to be taken to a pristine and secluded beach to learn how to surf, have a First Nations guide escort them on a day long hike to the "Wild Side" interpretive trail and Flores Island, take on a mountain fed rushing river in a kayak, or experience a gentler ocean kayak cruise to private inlets and hidden coves.
Horsemanship and riding are signatures of the resort, with a range of talented horses for the beginner to the expert rider. Wildlife viewing is also part of daily life, whether guests go in search of black bears and whales or see the wildlife on the outskirts of camp, kept there by a team of well trained and well loved dogs.
”We just returned from a one week stay at Clayoquot and it was the most amazing vacation we have ever had! We stayed in a suite tent with our 12 year old son and cannot begin to describe how much fun we had and how incredible the staff was. The magical adventures began from the moment we were greeted at the float plane by the managers, Adele and John and other staff members in a draft horse drawn wagon. The food, chefs and service staff in the dining lodge were the best you will find in the world and they went out of there way to make sure everything was done to perfection. We caught 17 salmon and halibut, rode beautifully trained horses to a gold mine, saw whales, otters, dolphin, eagles, and black bears, went kayaking, mountain biking, hiked to a waterfall, and went swimming in a bay where the fresh water and salt water met. Our son loved jumping off of a couple of bridges on the property which was a big hit with the kids and adults as well! Make sure to stay at least week though because you cannot possibly absorb all that the resort has to offer. The staff and guests at Clayoquot became our life-long friends and we cannot wait to go back!”
Meghan Macdonald
"Thank you Adele and John for making our 8th stay the best and we will see you all next year!"
Nancy Keane and Larry Finger
”The blend of raw, unfiltered adventure and complete relaxation was remarkable- and amidst such amazing beauty, no less! It's been a year and the memories of our time at Clayoquot are still vivid. Adele and John were such perfect hosts, and with Tim in the Kitchen and Paul at our table, we were welcomed so warmly. With so many "firsts" under our belts (kayaks, sea planes, old-growth forests, day-long riding expeditions, Zodiaks) we now embrace adventure vacations. What a transformation and all thanks to Clayoquot!!”
