Overview
There are three main areas at SHA: The método SHA, anti-aging and aesthetics medicine. The aim of these areas is to ensure that all guests enjoy a pleasant stay and leave looking and feeling younger and healthier, revitalised and renewed both inside and out. Guests will experience a fundamental change in their bodies, improving their quality of life, slowing down the aging process and preventing illness. All SHA’s programmes and treatments are created and supervised by world renowned experts including the eminent Michio Kushi, the world leader in modern macrobiotics.
What we eat and drink and how we breathe and think has a profound effect on our physical, emotional and spiritual health. SHA recognises that it is only by balancing all these necessary components that we can achieve optimum well-being. The aim of SHA is therefore to guide each and every guest through a personalised therapeutic programme of modern macrobiotic diet, relaxation and psychology to help them maximise their own health and happiness: this process is called Método SHA – the SHA Method.
To complement Método SHA, the Clinic features a comprehensive Anti-Ageing Unit. Designed to help guests understand how their bodies work, the Anti-Ageing Unit uses a series of psychological and endocrine system evaluations to identify mental and biochemical stress levels; it then devises personalised programmes to improve those areas requiring specific attention, thus enhancing health and longevity.
The Aesthetic Medicine Unit works alongside the Anti-Ageing Unit, offering guests the opportunity to substantially improve their aesthetic appearance through unique, world-leading skin treatments that deliver natural-looking results.
Together, Método SHA, the Anti-Ageing Unit and the Aesthetic Medicine Unit offer guests a comprehensive series of natural therapies to help balance the equilibrium between body and mind. SHA is located close to Altea, on the side of the Sierra Helada overlooking the Mediterranean Sea on Spain’s eastern coast. The site lies within the Sierra Helada National Park, one of Spain’s most important ornithological reserves, declared an area of outstanding natural beauty in 2005.
Albir’s mild micro-climate plays a significant factor in the conservation of an optimal state of health. Along with the renowned benefits of the healthy Mediterranean diet, these warm, year-round temperatures contributed to the World Health Organisation’s decision to name the area as one of the healthiest places to live on earth.
SHA comprises five buildings, interconnected with bridges and designed in harmony with the landscape. The site is punctuated with numerous gardens, large windows and spacious terraces to give guests the sense of a direct connection to the surrounding nature.
SHA’s setting radiates peace and tranquillity. This is a key part of the wellness process, as attaining a state of complete relaxation is essential to maximising the therapeutic benefits of the Clinic’s therapies and programmes.
Dining
SHA’s modern macrobiotic diet is based on the healing power of nature, accessed directly through food. Dishes feature Mediterranean and Japanese fusion cuisine, prepared using the finest organic ingredients.
The kitchen is run by Head Chef, Taro Kakinoki – a long-standing advocate of the benefits of a macrobiotic diet – and supervised by Michio Kushi, the world-leading advocate of modern macrobiotic techniques.
SHA offers guests a central restaurant, a terrace snack bar with wide-reaching views and a Tea Room that serves herbal teas and medicinal infusions in a peaceful setting overlooking the Zen Gardens.
Facilities
SPA
The Spa covers an area of 1,300 square metres and is divided into an aqua-lab zone and a treatment zone.
The aqua-lab zone has therapeutic pools, as well as physio-hydromassage beds, a toning pool, a rounded pebble path, tepidarium, sauna, caldarium, a sensations shower and relaxation areas, all set in the middle of the beautifully landscaped Zen Gardens. It also has a floatarium with salt water from the Dead Sea and chromotherapy and music therapy where guests can enjoy Watsu and multidimensional massages.
The treatment zone has 16 treatment cabins including a couples’ suite. A wide range of natural therapies, massages and beauty treatments are available featuring natural brands such as Sodashi, Sensai by Kanebo and John Masters Organics.
Guests can also enjoy open-air massages and treatments on the terraces that surround the infinity pool, or in the privacy of their own suite’s terrace.
The spa also has a salon for hairstyling, pedicures, manicures and podology, as well as a Tea Room that uses Oriental phytotherapy for optimum relaxation.
GOLF
In addition to two on-site putting greens, there are several professional golf courses in the vicinity of SHA; four of them are within 10 km and were designed by championship golfer Jack Nicklaus. The Clinic can arrange tee-off times for guests.
SAILING
There are five marinas within 15 km of the Clinic. The Clinic can arrange boat reservations as well as mooring for private yachts?.
CONFERENCE ROOMS
SHA is committed to education, with the aim of improving its guests’ lifestyles and therefore their overall quality of life. The Clinic has four conference rooms and a screening room where all types of talks and seminars are given on subjects related to wellness, health and relaxation. These facilities can also be used for external conferences.
SHA BOUTIQUE
The SHA boutique offers an exclusive collection of products, including natural cosmetics, books, music, scented candles, clothing and herbal teas.
PARKING
SHA offers guests a private car park with 24-hour security and valet service. Access to SHA is restricted to guests only to ensure privacy at all times and maintain a relaxing atmosphere.

SHA houses 93 suites within five separate buildings. The wider complex includes large swimming pools and waterfalls, multiple relaxation zones as well as Zen, Mediterranean and Tropical gardens.
Suites range from 80 to 320 square metres; each features an elegant yet minimalist modern design with living room, dressing room and air conditioning as well as spacious terrace with spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Sierra Helada. Some of the larger suites also have hydro-spas or kitchenettes so that the chef or one of his team can prepare meals or give private macrobiotic cooking classes.
The Presidential Suite is a penthouse with three bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, an adjacent room for 24-hour service personnel, a private swimming pool and a large solarium with panoramic views of the surrounding area. The SHA building is the latest creation of renowned architect Carlos Gilardi and prize-winning interior designer Elvira Blanco Montenegro.

The key areas of the SHA experience are macrobiotics, beauty and anti-ageing. Located at Playa del Albir close to the picturesque old town of Altea in the Valencian region within the Alicante province in Spain. SHA sits on beautiful hills overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the famous Valencian community mountains and surrounded by the Natural Park of Sierra Helada and within close proximity of several professional golf courses and four yachting marinas. The mild and pleasant microclimate of this area guarantees fantastic temperature throughout the year.
Accommodation 5 individual and architecturally striking buildings interconnected with bridges and featuring 93 suites ranging from 84 sqm to 320 sqm in size. Zen, Mediterranean and tropical gardens, extensive water features and waterfalls, and chill out areas are featured throughout the property.
All suites have spacious terraces, several with private Jacuzzis, with impressive skyline and sea views. Most suites offer spectacular views of the bay of Altea and the Rock of Ifach. Some suites are provided with kitchenettes for private in-room food preparation.
The suites are modern in design featuring a walk-in closet or kitchenette, en-suite bathroom or shower room, air conditioning, in-room safe and top of the range technology.
The Grand Suite includes 3 bedrooms including a living area, kitchen and one service butler/security room for staff, a private swimming pool and spacious roof terrace with panoramic views of the surrounding area.
SHA is the latest creation of the award-winning European designer - Elvira Blanco Montenegro.
Clinic Description: The 1,300sqm spa features therapeutic swimming pools, a flotation room, 15 treatment rooms, one couple’s treatment suite, consultation and medical rooms and extensive relaxation areas. Open-air massages and treatments are available in the unique setting of private Tatamis located by the swimming area.
In addition, SHA offers a series of classes in stress reduction, meditation, yoga, tai-chi, macrobiotic cooking, oriental diagnosis, natural health care and there are regular seminars helping guests to learn a new life skill.
At SHA Wellness Clinic guests receive a personalised macrobiotics programme, which offers guests a practical way of improving their physical health and helps them achieve balance between mind, body and soul.
Macrobiotic theory is based on the ancient Chinese philosophy of yin and yang as interpreted by George Oshawa. The basic principle of macrobiotic thinking is that all things – our bodies, foods and everything else – are composed of yin and yang energies. Yin energies are outward moving; yang energies are inward moving. Every thing has both yin and yang energies, but with neither of them in excess.
