Overview

The Royal Madikwe is available on an exclusive basis only.

Our commitment to you allows absolute flexibility to plan bespoke safaris and bush experiences of a lifetime. Royal Madikwe offers the perfect luxury destination for families and groups of friends wanting more than just space in a lodge, but rather a lodge that is their own private space.

Royal Madikwe is unlike other luxury safari destinations and welcomes families with children of all ages. Due to the exclusivity that we offer, families can relax and feel at home. Children are stimulated, educated and entertained by their African Bush surroundings and by our warm, friendly team. No set Safari Kid programmes are offered but rather designed on arrival, according to the children’s interests.

Location

Africa : South Africa

The Madikwe Game Reserve, situated against the Botswana border, 90 km north of Zeerust, just three hours' drive from both Johannesburg and Pretoria, is now one of South Africa's prime safari destinations. Madikwe is a Big Five game reserve covering some 75,000 hectare. It is one of the largest game reserves in South Africa. The rich diversity of vegetation ensures a wide range of game and the topography offers ideal game viewing opportunities.

Madikwe is home to 66 mammal species including the Big Five and approximately 300 resident and migrant bird species. It is one of South Africa's largest game reserves.

Madikwe has the distinction of being one of the few game reserves in the world to be proclaimed purely on the grounds of being the most appropriate and sustainable land use for an area.

Madikwe represents an extension to this philosophy in that it is run as a joint venture between the State, the private sector and local communities. The success of this approach has made Madikwe the role model for similar ventures being started up elsewhere in South Africa.

The reserve consists of vast plains of open woodlands and grasslands, dissected by the rugged Rant van Tweedepoort, and bordered in the south by the Dwarsberg Mountains. The area is dotted with huge rocky hills or inselbergs.

The entire reserve has been enclosed in a 150km perimeter fence which has been electrified to prevent the escape of elephants and the larger predators.

Madikwe is a Malaria Free area and therefore no anti malaria medication is required. Royal Madikwe does have Medical Emergency Cover with Med-Evac that will cover the evacuation and treatment of Medical Emergencies, however every case is determined individually and therefore no guarantees are given. We do advise that all guests take out personal travel insurance.

Guest reviews

Alan and Liz Cropper

"It is so much easier to rise at 5.30am when you know that you will share the dawn with such wonders: zebras posing themselves carefully so that their beautiful lines are shown to advantage; a bushbaby caught out in the daylight by the amazingly acute vision of Dinamos (the smile on legs who is our tracker); lions on their kill; a Caracal, rarely seen, stalking its prey right under our noses; wildebeest, who have not two IQ to rub together, lying down in the sun all facing the same way, so that predators can walk up and down the line to make their selection at ease; an ant invasion of a termite colony, a tumultuous fight to the death, with the termites organizing themselves into defensive groupings, their pincers to the fore.

Then, just as the start of hunger bites on the tummy, a stop for a mini-breakfast out in the bush. A table is set up. Fruit, muesli, tea, coffee and fruit juice appear. Ample to see the edge off our appetites, but not enough to affect Brunch, taken on our return to the Royal. A wonderful selection of imaginative foods including, I‘m glad to see, Eggs and Bacon.

A few hours to recover from the morning's ordeal, spent either on our own suite's deck by the plunge pool, or in one of the open rooms created within the Lodge, and then it's High
Tea at 3pm, a rather substantial 'little something' to keep us going through to Dinner.

The evening Game Ride brings 35 elephants playing in a water hole like it’s the last day of term, 4 Rhino as scared of us as we are of them, another Lion on another kill, Wildebeest, Giraffe, more posing Zebras and a magical finish, an 'owl hoot', which causes Dinamos and Riaan to turn the Landcruiser round, retrace our tracks and reveal that the 'owls' were in fact a Wild Dog pack tumbling over each other in an end of day play/hunt rehearsal.

Then not the normal return to dinner at the Royal that evening, but being landed on the lower-most deck where a table for two is set up, over-looking the Lodge's own water hole, with candles lit all the way up to and around the main lodge. The Lodge's staff sing their way down to us. Our Barman is named Evans, which I claim makes him Welsh and I allege, might explain everybody's ability to sing and dance so well. Dinner, as are all the meals, is beautifully cooked and exquisitely presented, our only worry being that there is too much!

Back to the suite, where on that particularly special evening we discover a path of rose petals takes us to a candle-lit bath and find a bottle of champagne ready in an ice bucket. In due course, sleep - and then we’re ready for the magic of the following morning's Game Ride.

A day to stay in our memories for ever."

The Royal Madikwe offers nothing short of luxurious hospitality and spectacular wildlife encounters. It therefore extends the perfect invitation to make a worthwhile difference, by simply having a superb holiday. Thus, an economic vehicle is created for the greater purpose of making a real difference as twenty percent of all profit generated through this commercial endeavor, will be made available for reinvestment into local community projects.

The remnants of colonialism are now fading as past memories, bursting forth a whole new Africa, vibrant energetic and integrated. And so the clouds of doubt divide, hope breaks through to create the new age for Bright Futures. Set up by Royal Madikwe to uplift and develop the surrounding local communities, Bright Futures also make donations to other charities helping children all over Africa.

Community Projects

Royal Madikwe’s latest community project is installing playground equipment to benefit children of 7 schools in the local rural communities.

*Community Centers, Inc. serves the neediest members of Greenwich community. The trusts mission in Greenwich is to support diversity, empower the less privileged, nurture the young and engage seniors. Most of their beneficiaries live in subsidized public housing and many live in single parent homes. Community Centers, Inc give these families the tools to achieve economic and emotional stability by providing a variety of programs, including citizenship and English language programs, homework clubs and tutoring for kids, and school enrichment and summer programs that provide a sanctuary for children of working parents who cannot afford to secure help. The purpose of the programs is to provide the kind of help that will show our beneficiaries how to help themselves. Many take place at 'Community Carters Home' at 61 East Putnam Avenue, where they are always are assured a welcome. However, the programs also take the trust into schools, on field trips, and even into the courtroom, where they serve as advocates for those who have no one else to speak up for them.

**BAAF plays a unique role in the field of adoption and fostering by transforming the future prospects of vulnerable children in the UK. It is the leading charity within this field, providing services across the board for all those involved. BAAF helps find loving homes for more than 250 children each year through its own family-finding services.

***Palna provides a home in Delhi (India) for foundling children. It was formed in 1978 from the Delhi Council for Child Welfare which had been established in 1952 to care for children displaced during the partition of India. In the 22 years of Palna's existence, nearly 2,000 children have been placed in loving families and their progress carefully monitored.

****The Loomba Trust supports education programmes for 2,200 children in India and will be working with the United Nations Foundation in five of the very poor north-eastern states to support widows and children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Their aims include provision of a sustenance allowance, counselling, livelihood training and education. It is hoped to reduce the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV/AIDS, alleviate the socio-economic and human impact of the epidemic and prevent the spread of HIV. The Loomba Trust has also given support to orphans and children affected by the Tsunami.
