our “carbon footprint” is considerably below the National average (source www.carbonfootprint.com/calculator). With the surrounding farm’s 25 acres of native forest (and more tree planting planned into the future), Hillcrest is significantly in “carbon credit”. Currently the following measures are in place:
- gardens planted with natives and mulched to conserve water and feed birds; - water saver shower heads and dual flush toilets in all bathrooms; - introduction of “Enviro Towels” i.e. guests asked if they would prefer to reduce environmental impact (use of water) by having their towels dried rather than replaced daily. This not only reduces water usage but educates the large number of guests who have not considered such impact before; - washing machine selected for water and power efficiency ; grey water recycled into gardens. - we work-shopped the implications of water consumption before installing spa baths. Extensive research ensured installation of the best models for water/energy efficiency and guest comfort; - instant LP gas hot water systems for cottage and spa suite so water is only heated as required; - electrical goods selected for power efficiency; LP gas used for cooking appliances; - research indicated our selected reverse cycle air-conditioning units as the most energy/emission-efficient method of heating/cooling currently on the market; - “love our planet, please don’t leave air-conditioning running with windows open or leave taps dripping unnecessarily” signs in bedroom handbooks; - reduction of packaging waste by attention to initial purchases in all departments + recycle wherever possible e.g. this folder has entered regional/State Tourism Awards every year since 2000; - “Inksaver” software purchased to reduce printer ink wastage; - Printer ink cartridges purchased from and returned for recycling to “Cartridge World”; - paper shredder purchased to enable waste paper recycling through chook shed/compost; - reusable shopping bags taken to supermarket to use instead of plastic throwaway bags; - separation of garbage for recycling pick-up ~ as well as main house compliance, the cottage is provided with separate, clearly marked bins for this; - non toxic cleaning products such as “Aware” phosphate free laundry powder used. - large compost heap for vegetable waste with compost recycled into the gardens; - chooks for edible waste, with eggs being recycled into guests; - solar heating to swimming pool; solar hot water to most of house (instant gas system to spas); - roof water collected into tanks for later use; - non animal tested toiletries used in guest rooms and personally; - guests educated to “take nothing but photographs and leave nothing but footprints (on the path)” when visiting local beauty spots and national parks.
