Dating from the late XVI century, Hacienda Zuleta lies in the spectacular Andean mountain range of Ecuador at 9,600 feet (2,800 meters) above the sea level, and only two hours north of Quito, the capital of Ecuador.
Zuleta is a colonial working farm of 4,000 acres (2,000 hectares) that belongs to the family of Mr. Galo Plaza Lasso, a former president of Ecuador, for more than 100 years. It was chosen as one of the world’s “Top Ten Finds” by Outside magazine and recently featred by National Geographic Traveler as sustainable and authentic hacienda in a large article.
The hacienda has 15 beautifully decorated bedrooms, all with their own fire place; Antique gardens along with cosy living and reading rooms offer a peaceful atmosphere. Delicious home cooking and regional cuisine is offered daily, prepared with organic vegetables, trout and dairy products produced on the Hacienda.
Hacienda Zuleta offers a great variety of activities and places to visit to its guests. With horseback riding being our speciality, we also offer mountain bikes and a horse drawn carriage for trips on hacienda grounds to observe the milking, the agriculture, mountain views and the tranquil life of the community.
Guest can also visit the Condor Huasi Project that works for the rehabilitation of the majestic Andean Condor.

As a qualified applicant for the “Tourism for Tomorrow - Investor in People Award" and for the Condé Nast "World Savers Award” we have high aims in both social and ecological work in our community.

With its tourism business the Plaza family is able to maintain the cultural heritage of a Caranqui archeological site dating back to 700 A.D. and 10,000 square meter colonial architecture. The tourism operation is also the major donator and fund raiser for the non-profit Galo Plaza Lasso Foundation, founded in 1990. Through the foundation funds, Hacienda Zuleta manages a library that offers extracurricular activities, workshops and kichua lessons, all as a free service for people from Zuleta and four other surrounding communities. We are sponsoring 10 families in need with scholarships, tarin teenagers as local guides, and support a women’s embroidery cooperative. The Hacienda started and promotes a recycling program and through a monthly bilingual newsletter, we inform both locals and guests about important and educational topics related to the Hacienda. In 1998, the Hacienda together with the community designated 4,077 hectares of primary forest and paramo as private protected area. The adjoining valley is a restricted area where we reintroduce native plants and where the Foundation runs a Condor rehabilitation in hopes that theses majestic Andean Condor will return in greater numbers to our region. At the Interpretation Center we teach kids about endangered species and nature conservancy. As of 2008, more than 6,000 children have visited the project.

92% of Hacienda employees are people from the local community and we helped them through extensive trainings to certify in their areas as professionals. Now we are the only hotel in Ecuador with 80% of its employees recognized as professionals. We think that education is a big step to sustainability through empowerment, especially as many of the people in rural areas only have elementary school education. Following this philosophy, we offer internships for teenagers, part time work for mothers and extensive training in many tourism/lifestyle related topics. Local people are trained as guides and we give free English lessons to every interested employee.
Our mission is to actively increase the standard of life and education by creating job opportunities and supporting new businesses in Zuleta as our own business grows. We want community members now and in future generations to get the job that best fits his or her abilities without having to abandon the village and family life.

Hacienda Zuleta is Smart Voyager certified since 2008 and re-certified this year with the second best score of all participating hotels in Ecuador.

We provide a personalized service to our guests and only accept small groups. Acces to critical areas is limited and requires expert guiding.

Terms & Policies

• 100% of reservation should be paid to confirm reservation.
• All extra charges incurred while staying at the Hacienda can be paid by cash, check or credit card
• Reservations for lodging cancelled within 60 days of stay will be given an 100% refund. Reservations cancelled at least 30 days before arrival will be given a 50% refund. Reservations cancelled less than 30 days before arrival will not be refunded.
• We charge an additional $25 for 24th, 25th & 31st of December and for 1st of January.
